Good Band Alert: Flobots

Flobots, a funky six member hip-hop group from Denver, CO is making waves in the underground music scene, with their killer line-up (viola, guitar, bass, drums, and two smokin MCs) mixed with socially conscious songs. But before you think they’re just another activist band with a message to drill into you, you’ve got to hear their tracks. We haven’t heard anything this musically innovative in a long time.

Hip-hoppers rap the vote

Last week, Celebs Gone Good joined some of rap and R&B’s most influential artists – like T.I., Ciara, and Lil’ Mama – in Philadelphia. But comparing bling wasn’t on the agenda. Instead, the stars came together to inspire young people to register to vote and to be more involved with the Presidential primaries and upcoming November election.

the problem:

There were a lot of students in my school who wanted to become involved in some type of activity but could not find a club or sport that fit their interests. I wanted to start some type of club or team for students who did not fit the mold of alternative activities. I decided that dance was a fairly popular activity that many of my friends and other students in the school would be interested in. I asked one of my teachers if she would be interested in advising the team and she agreed. I wrote a letter to the administration explaining the team I wanted to start, how would I go about starting the team, and assuring them that there would be plenty of students interested. They gave me permission to start my team and I did. I held auditions in my school cafeteria and picked a team of students. In the 2006-2007 school year we performed at pep rallies, basketball game half times, and at the new jersey student council meeting at six flags. Many of the students on the team graduated last year so I had to develop almost an entirely new team. This year we performed at pep rallies, basketball games, and were even invited to dance at the semi-pro Jersey Express basketball game. This team is something I take great pride in and I am happy to know that I created a club and team where students who could not find a club that they fit in belong.

The Fab4 Hip Hoppers is a group of four smart kids who want to teach other kids how to dance and sing. We want to improve our community and the way we talk to each other. We want to bring the shy kids out so they won't think they're alone, and so we can teach them that they always have someone to come to. It's a way to get exercise out of fun, and it calms you down.

My name is Syreeta Gates, I am 19 years old from Jamaica, Queens, and am in the process of becoming a Team Revolution fellow. To become a fellow there are a number of things that have to be completed. The goal of becoming a fellow is to be a Social Entrepreneur, Expansion Leader or a Program Director. I want to change history with the organization. I currently completed their fashion business program in which we work with POLO Ralph Lauren. For my community service project I am doing a “Team Rev’s Hip Hop LIFE” Project. This project will consist of a Public Service Announcement, Murals all around New York City, and a Conference(May 12,2007). This project will be completed through out the entire year of 2007.

Hip-Hop has always been a foundation in my life, so it was only a matter of time before I created something to change the look of an important element in my life.

The purpose of "Team Rev’s Hip-Hop Life" is to educate individuals on how the hip hop culture has changed lives. In part, they have to understand that hip hop is a lifestyle used to open doors for other realms and aspects of the world in a influential way.In response of the event, all the resources and funding
will be given to Team Revolution and other numerous non-profit organizations that are providing programming and encouraging youth that through service they will change their communities.

“Team Rev’s Hip Hop LIFE” Project:

1)Public Service Announcements - get influential people to speak about:
-community service in hip hop
-hip hop role models

2)Murals - put inspirational images and messages on walls in communities around NYC

3)Conference (May 12,2007)- teach people about lessons dealing with the hip hop culture by influence people in those specific areas.

The conference the lessons are:
Fashion and Photography
The Arts and The Music Business
Entrepreneurship in Hip Hop and Community service
