Ecosystem Management

We take care of our local ecosystems and clean up our areas of the enviroment and we also teach people and show them how to properly recycle and dispose of certain products. We would like to get this grant to help us with cleaning up our area and the teaching of recycling we would also like some of it to go towards supporting a sandcat exhibit at our local zoo.

                                                                                 Our Website
Going Green @ Blue Valley North High School

In a world that has become far more cognizant of our impact on our environment, students and teachers at Blue Valley North High School have established an effort to take small and obvious steps towards lessing our impact in waste creation. The first three objectives are to: one, eliminate and replace the use of Styrofoam trays at lunch, two, expand the number of materials recycled at North and three, create a greater awareness of our environmental impact as a school.

Eco-Roof

I go to Sandy High School in Sandy Oregon, and this year I took a trip with the Green Club at school into Portland to view some of the many eco-friendly green roofs installed on several large and small buildings throughout the city. There was even a middle school with an eco-garden. After the trip I was very impressed by how effective and efficient these green roofs are. Within the next four years we are supposed to have a new high school built, up and running. The blueprints and such are currently in the works, from what I know, and evidently the architecht is environmentally oriented.

Nature Refuge Bird Blind

My project is a 12'x 25' observation blind in our community nature refuge. It will have one-way glass so nature can be observed clearly without disrupting the normal activity of the birds, etc. The blind will have picnic tables so that local school can bring classes of students in for lessons on conservation, ecology, birds, nature, etc. It will also be open at all times to the community.

I have begun building the blind, but still need funds for the glass and storage bins for seed, etc.

Conservation and Wildlife Expo

The office I work for is hosting a Conservation and Wildlife Expo. At our Expo (held August 22nd-24th) we put on educational presentations for the public, have vendors, do educational activities such as build bird houses, teach the importance of recycling, teach kids how to shoot a bow and arrow properly and safely, have trap shooting/archery competitions, and in general try to spread the word about environmental stewardship. I started this Expo 2 years ago and last year we had 2300 people go through our gates! For more information go to http://www.mn.nrcs.usda.gov/partnerships/wadena/

Well, where do I start? Here's the letter I sent to the local conservation crew, RACC (Rockbridge Area Conservation Crew). Below that are my listed ideas for the project. Below that is the replied email from RACC's executive director. Below THAT is the email from the board member who is leading the planning for this year's community clean-up.

Cross-Country for Conservation

Starting February 2009, I will be biking across the country to raise money for my high school's environmental action club. The experience will be a wonderful opportunity for me to raise money for my club and thus lessen the carbon footprint of my school, and therefore community.

dining for education/ SmartStart (tentative title - stand by for website)

MISSION STATEMENT:
We are committed that Seattle students will develop their own understanding of food and energy through direct experience with the community.
DINNER:
In Seattle on January 12th 2008, local communities of educators, builders, chefs, legislators and students will gather to discuss the future of environmental education in Seattle highschools.

Our goal is to discuss what is already in place and what people are doing that works and apply that to the future of education.

Shed Your Fears - Reptile Education

Shed Your Fears - Reptile Education is a program that I started to educate people of all ages the value of reptiles. Many people think that snakes are vile, evil creatures that are just out to get us. In my program, I give people the chance to see, touch, and learn about snakes, lizards, as well as other reptiles and amphibians. The best way to teach someone about something, is to allow them to have hands-on experience.
