The question that lead to this uncomfortable answer from McCain? Whether or not he supported grants for sex education in the United States and whether such programs should include directions for using contraceptives. For the record, President Bush supports policy of promoting only abstinence.
When reporters asked McCain in the past whether the government should provide contraceptives or counseling on contraceptives, he replied, "You've stumped me."
John McCain's VP nominee Sarah Palin announced today that her 17 year old daughter Bristol is 5 months pregnant. Palin also said that her daughter plans to marry the father of the baby and that she has the love and support of her parents.
America saw it's first increase (though small) in the teen pregnancy rate since it began dropping from a peak in 1991. Experts predict that over 750,000 teenage girls will become pregnant this year.

Nevada has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country as well as the highest high school drop-out rate in the country. Given the anything-goes tourist culture in Las Vegas as well as the lack of comprehensive sexuality education in southern Nevada schools, this doesn't seem to be a coincidence. Young women in southern Nevada are given neither the information nor the opportunities they need to protect themselves and their futures.

GASP (Girls Advocating for Smoke-free Pregnancies) is a youth-led initiative led by a couple of young ladies from the anti-smoking group TRU. Our focus is on teen mothers, but we reach out to all people. We strive to lower the number of teen mothers that use tobacco during pregnancy or around children. Children all over the world face health obstacles because of their parent's smoking habits. This is totally unfair to the innocent children, so we work with their parents.

Last summer, our community was schocked to hear of a 17 year old girl dying in a car accident on her way from a party to another party late one Saturday night. In a rural and small community, it seems that there are limited ways to "have fun." During school most kids play sports, so they tend not to resort to drinking. In the summer, however, drinking and partying are some of the most popular ways to enjoy summer.

I volunteer over 3 hours every week to help in a special needs seminary class. After falling in love with these children, I joined efforts with other student body presidents in the area to host a buddy walk for the special needs kids in Idaho Falls. The Buddy Walk began at a local park where the special need children, friends, and family met. The children walked a quarter of a mile to a local highschool where we hosted a carnival. The carnival consisted of fun carnival games, food, and blow up toys.

I am doing a project for school but plan on continuing it to make teens in NC more aware of the effects of teen pregnancies, from the affects on the body to getting STD's

Sexual Integrity Advocates, or SIA, is a group that was started four years ago, not only to promote and encourage the youth to live purely, but to also educate teenagers on sex. Unlike other organizations this group is made up of teenagers that give talks around the city to other teenagers. I’ve had the opportunity to be one a member of this organization and to give presentations of waiting to have sex until marriage. The whole idea behind SIA is to decrease the occurrence of teen pregnancies, give teenagers self-esteem, and build up a more mature and focused community.

While the cause I chose is only a piece of the puzzle, it is a big piece. Teens in America are facing challenges that no other generation before them has faced. The media has set up programming that will coerce them into certain attitudes and lifestyle choices from the time they are young. For example, what they wear, moral authority, relationship choices, violence, etc. My desire is to give them an alternative to being raised by the media and bringing the hearts of the children back to the parents and visa versa.

B.E.T.A of titusville inc, is an organization that helps with crisis pregnancy center, this is a non-judgemental counseling, free pregnancy testing, free maternity clothing,infant furniture, bedding, layette items, baby clothing,as well as baby formula and diapers on an emergency basis. We have been reaching out to women in unplanned pregnancies, single mothers of infants, confused and frighten teenagers and distressed families. We hold seminars for the youths in our area to help them be informed on dealing with the changes from childhood to adolescence to adulthood.
