the problem:

There are women and children's shelters all over long island filled with individuals who have experienced some sort of tragic even in their lives, which is the main reason for why they are living in the shelters. My main goal is to give them some happniess and hope to move on with their lives so they can eventually live in their own home with their children. I have helped organize many events such as a fashion show where I donated clothes sponsored by Old Navy. They were able to open brand new Christmas presents this year. Additionally, over the summer I organized a summer BBQ so the kids could enjoy a beautiful summer day.

why it's important:

I think we take too much for granted and it's important that we see how much we have. Sometimes this means looking at people who are less fortunate than us and taking action. When we see how fortunate we are, it motivates us to do better for others. Being that I've experienced a lot helping these individuals, I can honestly say that very small acts of kindness ALWAYS make a difference. Sometimes all people need is a little confidence, a little hope, and a dose of happiness.

the plan of action:

Currently, I am planning a musical concert to help raise money to buy the families in the shelters a BBQ grill, which they have specifically requested. My plans for the future are to continue planning fundrasiers and different kinds of parties to keep giving back to these families who truly deserve it. They are probably the sweetest people I have ever met and they could really use a nice surprise once in a while. The kids always beg for us to come back and visit. I know for a fact that my hardwork makes a difference and that's all I need.

how you can get involved:

Reach out to a shelter in your community. Do some random acts of kindness because it will make a difference no matter how small!

the problem:

We are raising Orphan Awareness for the 5.5 million orphans of Ethiopia, however, we are not taking the traditional approach of promoting adoption. We have decided to seek out the route cause. Our goal is to help the poverty-stricken women of Ethiopia, who would otherwise fall to prostitution or rape, get off the streets and into a safe environment. Thus, drastically reducing the future orphan population in Ethiopia. Not only are we out to raise awareness for the existing orphans of Ethiopia, we are out to make sure that the children of the future do not become orphaned.

why it's important:

I have a couple of very close family friends who have adopted orphans from Ethiopia. These kids literally have nothing yet somehow they are always smiling and full of joy. It breaks my heart to know that there are 5.5 million more orphaned children just like the ones I have grown to love and nobody is standing up for them. It is time to DO SOMETHING.

the plan of action:

We are creating a house; the Alem House. This house will provide a safe place for the poverty-stricken women of Ethiopia to live. Without a secure place to stay these women are subject to abuse, rape, and often fall victim to prostitution in desperation to provide for their children. By opening the Alem House, not only are we establishing a safe haven for these women, we are preventing the abuse, rape, prostitution, and STD's and most importantly, we are preventing children of the future from becoming orphans.

It sounds so simple. The bottom line is that this project is going to have to be funded. We are doing everything in our power to raise money for the Alem House. We have decided to host a concert. Three of the top artists in Tulsa, OK will be performing and we will also have auction items and take up love offerings. Auction items range from autographed guitars, to autographed footballs, to hand -made crafts. $10,000 would give us an incredible kick start in our vision, so that is where we have set the bar. However, we are not going to stop there. There is much more to be done and this is only the beginning!

how you can get involved:

Others may help by simply spreading the word, sharing the Alem House video, and becoming the voice for the orphans. Money also plays a vital role in our efforts, so donations are always appreciated as well.

The Garage Giveaway is geared to helping families in need around the holiday season every year.

why it's important:

Every year around September, a team of about 35 volunteers, work together to spread the word that we have begun collecting donations. The Garage Giveaway is entirely volunteer-based. We collect everything from couches to shoes. All of the items that have been donated are stored in donated storage units until the beginning of January when we have a scheduled day to set up all of the donations and give them away to the needy.

the plan of action:

The Garage Giveaway was started by a few close friends of mine that were driven by Francis Chan's novel Crazy Love. They simply felt the need to do something to give back to the community as that was what they felt called to do. We take donations and work very hard to separate them into organized clusters to be stored in storage units until the day of the event. It is a crazy, long process but it is so worth it to see the impact you can make on someone's life in the end.

how you can get involved:

Others can help simply by praying year-round for this project, or by donating items and time to go to those in need.

why it's important:

This important to me very much because God has really laid this on my heart. I know if it's the plan he has for my life then it will be successful. It's also important because I have a heart for this generation and want to see everyone blessed like I have been. In the world today homelessness, hunger, and teen addiction is an every day thing. We have became accustomed to the ways of hate and abandonment. I believe this generation needs rebuilding and reviving.

the plan of action:

My plan would want to feed starving/hungry families. We would address mainly women and children but also guys. We would want to give plans and opportunities to teens addicted to drugs, alcoholism, sex, pornography, etc. We will strive to help teens and children to realize that there is a better life planed for them.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by donating there time, hard work, dedication, and heart. Also donations of money would be very much appreciated.

We do other community service actions - at Christmas we collected donations of hats, gloves and scarves for the Salvation Army. This project is more personal, since we know there are homeless teens at our high school.

the plan of action:

We belong to the Classical Academy within our high school and we led by example. We opened up Teens for Jeans to the entire school but made announcements about the program, distribute flyers, and within the Classical Academy, ran a contest for the most jeans collected by home room.

the problem:

Im trying to help the homeless over time our town is filling up more and more with unfortunate families and individuals who end up being homeless, wearing same clothes daily, no food or warmth. Iwork at hanford lowes and i get homless people all the time just wanting to sit inside or drink the free coffee cause their so cold and it breaks my heart, ill start a conversation and they will tell me " oh yea im waiting for my boss, we are building a house" or " my elementry teacher was nice" so you can see how they try to hide that their homeless but than they have all these good memories of their teachers so you know their heart means well. Im always found giving food out. I live in the country and their is a man who lives in a black single cab behind a tree. One night we BBQ. i felt bad for him knowing he probably has no food so i made him a plate and took it down to the tree, my boyfriend panic when he found out that i did he always tells me " you cant trust them, you never know" however i dont believe thats true. Cause he was so thankful when i handed him a warm plate of food. Made me smile! I would like to do a soup kitchen for the homeless or even go to them where they all live in tents and cook for them to make them warm meal , i have also donated clothes & sweaters to them. I would like to help out more if i had the money im single mom with a beautiful 11 month old son.

why it's important:

This is important to me because helping people is what i do , since i was young i find joy in helping others. everyone in life hit rock bottom however we live in a community hoping others will be their for us at one point of time in life, i believe thats where i come in to help them believe its not the end of the road their is always hope and someone out their who cares and will try their best to get them back on their feet.

the plan of action:

My plan is to make sure everyone has a warm meal , clothes and a brighter future , i would like to cook meals and provide clothes and possibly down the road try to get them jobs. try to clean up their living conditions and let them know that the community cares.

Fact:b Last year, 184 homeless people were counted in Kings County and 620 in Tulare County, according to the 2011 report. Nearly one-third of them went “unsheltered,” meaning they were out on the streets, the report said.

how you can get involved:

they can help by donating food, clothes, time, money. the more the better. i believe everyone should volunteer some point in life . cause one day you never know that just might be you.

why it's important:

"I used to spend hours walking along the river bank in Cathedral Park picking up trash with a baby (Thor Foss). As a nanny and a mother I found it very rewarding, however, daunting. I had been longing to make this World a better place and create a positive global shift. My hope is that my son, whom I gave up adoption because of my young age, would be impacted by all my love and dedication to the good of humanity. I knew I could not do this alone...."

the plan of action:

The first step of action I took was going to a community meeting and complaining about the issue. I went to a Cathedral Park Neighborhood Association meeting and voiced my opinion. I was very passionate and disturbed by the abundance of litter along the river bank. when I asked the group who was in charge of the litter removal along the Willamette River the group responded in unison "You are." After just a moment of thinking about it I responded "Yes I am!"

The second step I took was working with local neighborhood activist seeking advice for sponsorship, policies and regulations (for Parks & Recreation and Sound permitting)to get this work done. I gained sponsorship though SOLVE and Metro during this first clean up. It took two months for me to plan the first clean up.

For the first year I spend around 1,000 of my own money to get things like: dumpster retails, permitting, electricity use and food and water bottles.

During the 2nd year I have spend only a few 100 dollars thanks to a sponsorship though Gunderson (a local industrial Superfund site contributor) and they started paying for the dumpster rental and food on occasion. Some local vendors started donating food upon my request.

PDXOP went about this mission by creating the Cathedral Park Clean UP (CPCU) events. These events have occurred consecutively every other month since inception. In the last two years PDXOP's events have removed over ten thousand pounds of trash, including tires, syringes, and glass off theriverside park. PDXOP has made a direct impact upon the beauty, health, safety, vitality, and preservation of St. Johns.

Now in the third year we are looking to expand the efforts of PDXOP outside of Cathedral Park and into the St. Johns business and residential district.

PDXOP has current plans to do a monthly revitalization and beautification event in the St. John's business district to cleanup litter, graffiti, and invasive plants, to install murals, to install rainwater gardensin public spaces, as well as Cathedral Park Clean Up events along the Willamette River.
