School and Community Outdoor Classroom and Learning Center

A project at a local middle school will focus on creating school attachments and community bonds through volunteering to create an outdoor classroom, trail, and set of learning centers. Students will utilize critical thinking, inquiry, reading comprehension, writing, and math skills to research and design a nature trail and outdoor classroom. The area includes forest land and grassy areas with a creek that runs through the middle.

Greener School Day at Tamarac Secondary School

The Tamarac High School National Honor Society has chosen to make our entire campus a more environmentally friendly place. Exactly one week after Earth Day (April 29th), the National Honor Society will host a Greener School Day for grades K-12 at the Brunswick CSD campus. On Greener School Day the National Honor Society (in conjunction with Tamarac’s Student Senate, Middle School Student Senate, National Junior Honor Society, Biology Club, and Key Club) plans to “take over” our school for six full periods.

Happify the Chitlins

I would like to visit my local elementary and perform a few songs on the guitar for the preschoolers. Not only do I hope to entertain the children in a comical fashion but I hope to inspire them at a young age to start an interest in music as well as with in the arts. I believe this could be a very advantages opportunity for the kids as it could kick start there interest in learning and build skills that are very powerful tools that they can apply throughout life.

Fire Explorers

The Fire Explorers is a program that lets teenagers and young adults experience and learn about the fire and emergency medical services. We explorers run the post. We elect our own officers, have dues that we collect monthly, and also plan our own meetings. We show leadership to our own explorers because we are leading each other with teamwork and responsibilities with help of our advisors.

College Mentors For Kids

This is a club of college students who meet with grade school children every week to do activities on a college campus. We introduce the kids to professors and visit different buildings on the Notre Dame campus to show the kids the benefits of attending college. The kids are in 1st through 4th grade, and none of their parents ever went to college. So, generally we are their first impression and experience with higher education. We teach them about all the opportunities college can offer, and how they could attend.

Books on tape

In our world, not everyone is given equal opportunity to learn, so as two sophomores, we began a project to change this. We recorded books on tape for children in impoverished neighborhoods. We set a goal to record a total of 100 books and donate the books and their matching tapes to four elementary schools. We went to a local festival to spread the word about our project and collect donations. In the end, we raised $150 for supplies.  Next, we visited countless yard sales and thrift stores looking for childrens books, as well as donating our own.
