New Orleans
Hurricane Gustav has cleared out of New Orleans, but officials there are urging people not to return home just yet. Over 1 million households in Louisiana are without power including 300,000 homes in the New Orleans area, and debris and downed power lines in the streets mean many areas are still unsafe.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says residents will have to return home in stages.

SAFER takes the direct approach to rebuilding the city of New Orleans, offering free labor to people who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of repairing their homes. We communicate directly with our families about their needs and their hopes for their rebuilt homes, and with community leaders and organizations about their plans for revitalizing their neighborhood. We realize that rebuilding can be a huge challenge, especially for homeowners who have few funds or also have the responsibility of a job and caring for a family.

This was a project aimed to create a self-managed library in New Orleans that would inspire youth ages 5 thru 15 affected by Hurricane Katrina to excel academically through reading and writing. It was also a project aimed to encourage community development, parental involvement in the educational lives of their children, and inspire others to continue in the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.

The mission of the New Orleans Young Urban Rebuilding Professionals Initiative (NYI) is to create a support network to connect, retain, and attract young professionals from diverse backgrounds for a sustainable New Orleans. While the majority of the attention in New Orleans is focused on rebuilding the infrastructure, there also needs to be a way to invest in the future human capital of the city. In order to do so, there must be an organization that finds ways of connecting those who are here, giving them the opportunities to stay in New Orleans, and attract more people.

Building Harmonies is a youth-led program started in March 2006 by Tess Domb Sadof and Joshua Wolfsun (both 12 at the time), to provide opportunities for local youth performers, artists and writers to work together to support and organize around social justice issues.

I hosted a fashion show at Bloomingdale’s on Saturday, March 17th at 1:00 p.m. The fashion show featured high school students, as well as professional models and was free to the public. There was a Worldvision Child Sponsorship booth that allowed people to sponsor impoverished children in many different countries, but the main focus of the event was rebuilding New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
A raffle was held for a three night Caribbean cruise on either the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line or on Carnival Cruise Lines.

The mission of TeensLead, L.L.C. is to connect New Orleans area students and incoming volunteers to beautification and service projects in New Orleans; and to further develop individual leadership skills. We intend on achieving this through three goals. 1) Connecting local high school students with service projects in New Orleans. Most New Orleans high school students require service hours to complete their high school education. TeensLead will not only supply service requirements through separate service projects, but re-acquaint local students with their community.

Help within the urban communities of New Orleans for children that are willing to recieve an education. I plan to do this by providing books and hopefully more after school programs to them.
