Building Bridges: Nicaragua: Fox Lane High School

Project Description

At Fox Lane High School, we have a club called Building Bridges which works with Bridges to Community in Nicaragua. For years we have been sending students to Nicaragua to build homes for impoverished citizens of the country. This year was the first year it had become a club in our school, instead of an out of school trip. It has been a great success and this year, in April of 2008, we are sending 22 people to Nicarauga. Not only has it changed lives in Nicaragua for hundreds of families, it has changed lives right here, at home and has motivated students to take bigger strides towards being an active global citizen. Fortunately, we have dedicated students willing to give up their spring breaks to take part in this amazing experience and humanitarian effort. Unfortunately, many students can not afford this trip due to their financial circumstances. Our goal is to lower or completely eliminate the cost of travel so more people can get involved.

Unlocking Today's Generation

Project Description

I started a middle school mentoring and tutoring program at the Alex Spears YMCA in Greensboro. As Volunteer-Coordinator, I arranged a group of specially chosen high school students to have spend an hour or two one or two times a week with middle schoolers that are in the YMCA after-school program. "Helping" them is a general term to describe all of the various things our tutors do. If the child needs someone to have fun with in a group game of capture the flag, we're there, if they need to discuss a problem, we listen, if they need assistance with school work, we are on top of it. Basically we are doing everything in our power to make sure this group of children develops to their full potential as we try and provide an undivided attention that many public schools and busy parents don't have the opportunity to give. I have an amazing amount of faith in this generation, and I want to inspire and challange as many people as I can to be the best they can be, and ideally this will grow exponentially.

Tommorow's Leonardo

Project Description

Our principal of 16 years retired last spring. While here at the school, she slowly disposed of all art, and other creative activities. The entire focus was on pencil and paper tasks. Our kindergarten students have no art easels (or other thought provoking creative toys for that matter). We would like to purchase two easels in order for the children to have an opportunity to develop their creativity. Each easel will allow four children to paint at a time, giving eight spots each morning and lunch recess. We have seen a decline in our children's ability to think critically, and we feel that making choices and decisions as a part of the artistic experience found in painting will develop that potential. Please help us allow the creative genius of tomorrow's generations to develop.

New Orleans Youth Library Project

Project Description

This was a project aimed to create a self-managed library in New Orleans that would inspire youth ages 5 thru 15 affected by Hurricane Katrina to excel academically through reading and writing. It was also a project aimed to encourage community development, parental involvement in the educational lives of their children, and inspire others to continue in the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans. The project took a few months of planning, but after a summer's dedication, waht resulted was an over 900-book free library open to the youth, family, and friends of the Cutoff Community Center in Lower Algiers. All of the books underwent an extensive organizational process, as they were all alphabetized, labeled according to grade level, organized, and shelved accordingly. All of the information was then manually imputed in an electronic catalog to ensure that the library functioned similar to a typical public library.
This project was created not simply a way to aid in the Katrina Relief efforts, but it was an effort to specifically address the needs of a group of urban youth plagued by economic inaccessibility, drugs, and violence. The Cutoff Youth Library provides a productive and educational outlet for youth that otherwise seek sports and the streets as an outlet.

Many people,(adults mostly) don't pay enough attention
to what us teens have to say. There are lots of things
that I would like to see change in my community but no
one who I think could help me, listens. So my project
"Teens Running Things" will hopefully tell the community
how we all feel about being "accidently ignored."

The March To Good Health

Project Description

This project is a fun project that will be appealing to people and make them want to get into shape and lead a healthy life style. The Project is called the March to good health because thats exactly what it is, a long distance walk that will motivate people to get into shape. Many people die each year due to bad health and poor choice of living. Prior to the event we will raise awareness of this and motivate people to change not only how they look on the outside, but change their overall health too. We will also ask people who are famous in the world of famous or just famous to the world to participate and help lead the world to good health. Most people who are passionate about health would be more than happy to participate in such a great cause. Each participant will raise money that will go toward the cure for cancer. Bad health is a way to develope cancer and we are trying to demolish bad health within our nation. By raising money toward cancer we are atleast making an attempt to heal those who have already gone down the path toward unhealthy living.

Caesar Chavez Public Charter School Tenth Grade Community Action Project

Project Description

The organization I am passionately dedicated to is Mobilize.org. Mobilize.org is an all-partisan network dedicated to educating, empowering, and energizing young people to increase our civic engagement and political participation. We operate through Mobilizer Teams who serve as our ground troops in the war against political apathy. These teams bring together local activists and leaders to help pave the highway to youth empowerment. One of the projects that I have worked on through my involvement with Mobilize.org is the Caesar Chavez 10th Grade Community Action Project. The Caesar Chavez 10th Grade Public Policy Project allows students the opportunity to make social change and influence public policy through an eight-week hands-on mentorship with alocal nonprofit organization. The program fosters creativity, leadership, and responsibility as students design, prepare and complete their own issue-influencing project. Through Mobilize.org and with the assistance of Do Something, students can continue to construct worthwhile community building projects similar to this years’ anti-gang, anti-violence interactive assembly that the students presented to their peers. Mobilize.org works hand-in-hand with the Caesar Chavez Public Policy High School to develop and complete this influential public-policy project that I am most passionately dedicated to continuing.
