In the area, there really is nothing to do. constantly you'll see teenagers, and even children as young as 10 walking the streets and just basicly getting into trouble. Drugs, alcohol, and violence are constantly seen on every street corner. The adults and authority in the area complain about the problem, yet give no solution. If you have no car, your limited to going to see an overpriced movie, or going to the walmart or target. If you do have a car, your expected to drive anywhere from a half hour to an hour an a half to find something fun to do. So I decided that its time to give people in this area something to do, somewhere safe and fun to go. I'm currently looking for a building to set up a kind of teenage club. I'm friends with many local bands, who are trying to make their break, and I'm sure i could convince them to play at the club for no cost, if only to get their name out there. The Giant in our area has a program where it donates $15 worth of food once a week to a worthwhile charity, and i'm sure that many of the other local business' would contribute also when they realize how many teens we could be getting off the streets. I've already spoken to people who are in the police academy who would be glad to do bodyguard work, such as controlling the crowd and monitering those who enter, and i really think that this idea will take off if its given the opportunity. I've already talked to many people at the high school and they agree. So hopefully if i receive funding i can make this happen.

Project Description

Inglemoor High School's clubs, Project Darfur and Amani (Peace) for Africa (AFA) are joining together to put on a benefit concert this May. The profits from the concert will benefit World Vision, and their work along with giving aid to a school in Tanzania. The concert will take place on May 30th, at El Corazon in Seattle. Band that have already committed are local groups, including Wimbleweather.

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota is home to thousands of Lakota Indian people. Unfortunately, it is also home to a huge drug problem that effects everyone. Children and adults alike die from drug related causes everyday. I am apart of a small group of people here in Pine Ridge who are working towards bringing something positive to the reservation. The way that we hope to do this is through music. We would like support in putting on a drug awareness concert- free and open to everyone. We are planning to have positive messages, music, art and free food. We hope that this day of celebrating awareness will inform our youth and help them see that there is something else out there besides the use and abuse of drugs. The bands we are bringing in are: Aztlan Underground, RED, NyteLyfe, K-dog, Derelict, RipSnort. All of these bands spread a positive message, a few incorporate a cultural element in their music and all of them are friends of ours. There are also a group of guys coming from Arizona on their own free will who are gonna DJ through out the day. Totelcytol, a muralist team from LA is coming to run an art workshop and paint a mural the week before and the day of the concert. All of this the music, the food and the art is free and open to everyone. Realizing that drugs are rampant everywhere, we know we can't exterminate the use completely... But, we believe giving our youth a chance to dream of another way of living is a start.

This has been an idea that I've had for a little over a year to try to help all of the new bands get their music and name out there. Not only do they get to play at a free concert, but they will be able to get a free recording of the night right off of the sound board. If everything works out it should be on April 11, 2008 at The Ally in Fullerton. Al money raised will benefit a little recording organization I started to provide a cheap, high quality audio recording for bands in their early stages. We are here to help the new bands get up off the ground. Not only does it go to help the bands and my recording organization to provide more bands with free or very inexpensive recordings, but it will also go to help many of the local teens stay away from drugs and alcohol because it is scheduled for a Friday ,big party night.

It is being held at the Curtain Club ad the Liquid Lounge simulatiously, on April 26, 2008. We're having local bands to play the event for free, and all the proceeds go to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. www.lls.org

It is our goal to raise $12,000 for the cause, while raising awareness to the local youth about the cancer and the good of the society. It is my personal job to try to find sponsorship to help fund the event and to meet our goal for the society. I'm also the interim director because our main director has broken her ankle, so I'm also contacting the venues and helping with direction on what needs to take place. I'll be setting up a donation and a raffle table on site.

The reason a concert was chosen as the event is because local music is a major part of the Dallas area, and is a great way to bring the younger community together.

My personal reason for why I chose to do this is because of my good friend Timothy Mesch. He passed away 3/27/07 from a metastazied Melanoma. He was 26 years old. Annie Karundethu has worked with the LLS before in the past and asked me to help out with the event. Although Melanoma doesn't fall under Leukemia or Lymphoma, cancer can still be educated to our society. It's my goal to let everyone know that this can happen to anyone, and we need to come together to help fight the disease and help the families that are suffering from it.

McFest is a benefit concert for Special Olympics at the Metro in Chicago. I am the co-chair and we are currently working on the second year of the show. In 2007, it was held in April and we featured six local high-school and college age bands from the Chicago area. They were: The Days, With Waking Eyes, Fishing With Spoons, TeamOne, Still Not Sexy, and Bury Me At Makeout Creek. Doors opened at 2:30, and the show was on its way at 3:00. We had Special Olympics global messenger Chris come on stage with us and speak about her experience with Special Olympics. We also had two more global messengers help us announce the raffle prizes later on in the show. The show went on until 8:00, after both ABC and NBC news channels showed up to cover it. Leah Westfall from New City magazine also interviewed us for her own article. We sold around 530 tickets in advance, put a little over 100 names on the guest list, and sold over 160 tickets at the door. We raised a total of 10,000 dollars for Special Olympics through sponsorships and donations from various companies such as Victory Records, Island Def Jam, Schubas, Take 5, DeVine Racing, Jimmy Johns, Chipotle, Aware Records and so many more, McFest merchandise, raffle tickets, and ticket sales. McFest could not have been any more successful and we are hoping to do even better in 2008!

After the American occupation of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 a group of friends and I, who at the time attended an all-girls school, became interested in helping out the education of young women in Afghanistan, an area in which young girls were having difficulties gaining access to education. We decided to have our high school enter into a "sister school" relationship with The Primary School of Hope in Kabul, Afghanistan, a school that promotes education for Afghani girls and boys financed by the International Foundation for Hope. We donated school supplies to them and they educated us about their lives and experience. Before our graduating year, this group of friends and I decided to raise money to give this school in addition to educating our peers about the social and cultural history of Afghanistan. We decided that the most efficient way to get as many people as possible to hear about Afghanistan, was to organize a benefit concert for our "sister school". We were able to easily find popular local bands and a cheap venue, the El Torreon in Kansas City. Further, we arranged educational material on the history of Afghanistan including the rise and fall of the Taliban. That event was quite successful as we raised approximately $1500 for the school. Two years later, I decided to continue this cause about which I am so passionate. I was in college in Chicago, and so I held the concert at the Logan Square Auditorium. This year, the concert raised $600 and educated more people about educational issues in Afghanistan. This coming spring, depending on funds for a venue, I hope to continue educating my peers about Afghanistan and continue my relationship with The School of Hope.

I took volunteers from my high school, Kapolei High School, and organized a concert for the elderly and held events to encourage student and elderly interaction. At the end, I held a christmas concert for the elderly at the nursing home.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2004 myself, along with two fellow students, created the Disaster Relief Club at our high school to help generate aid to be sent for the relief effort. We held club meetings after school to propose various ways to raise money to be sent to the areas affected by the hurricanes. We developed the idea to hold a "battle of the bands" of sorts at our high school to help raise money and awareness. We asked local rock bands and musical acts to play in our school auditorium for a night of music and fun. We also went around our community and asked for local sponsorships to help fund the concert. The concert went well, and helped to spark interest in other students interested in helping with the club's efforts. The next year i was voted as treasurer of the Club. We then planned another benefit concert, this time sending all proceeds to the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. The concert went very well, raising over sixteen hundred dollars to be split evenly between the two charities. Towards the end of the school year we also planned and carried out a school wide locker clean out. Each student in our high school was informed to take all reusable school supplies to one of our club members, where we then sorted, cleaned and packaged all the used school supplies to be sent to schools overseas in Iraq. This year we set our sights higher than ever. I was voted as co-president of the club at the beginning of the school year and am now in charge of nearly thirty members; the most in our clubs history. We held our third annual Disaster Relief Concert on November 16th. The concert this year benefited only the local chapter of the Red Cross to help aide in many of the unseen yet equally as tragic disasters that occur around our own community. We rose over $1200 that night alone and are still expecting more local contributions before we cut the check. We also have plans to hold an all days sports competition for our high school sports teams to benefit the local chapter of Habitat For Humanity later this school year.
