The Community we will be helping are all around the world. This is not only a community project but also a world wide project. We are trying to build community centers all around the world to help and in inform children about Global Warming and Enviromental problems. This Project will also raise money for children with any kind of sickness and/or disablity.

Community Krump

Project Summary:

The purpose of my project is to help the community by giving children and adolescents from underprivileged and dangerous neighborhoods an alternative to the “street life.” I will be introducing them to the world of Krump dancing by giving lessons at a community center in North Philadelphia. Krump will be the main dance that I teach. Krump was originally invented to give the youth in South Central Los Angeles a means of staying off of the streets and out of gang life. I have been krumping myself for about two years and have plenty of experience and knowledge as to what the benefits of krumping are and how it can help a community.
This project will serve the community of North Philadelphia. It includes children and adolescents from approximately ages four to seventeen who choose to be there in order to escape the pull of the street life that more and more children are falling into in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is only getting worse with its problems and needs us to fix it. I plan on helping to do this by stopping it before it starts, in the minds of the younger generation.

Kids-n-Sports is something that teenagers can help kids in their community. There are many sports to choose from, but I am mainly talking about basketball. If you want to get more specific Upward Basketball. If teenagers of today would get involved with the younger kids in their community, so many kids would grow up and not be involved with all of whats wrong with today.
Teenagers would volunteer their time to come out to the church and either coach or referre the younger kids. The kids would then get to know those teenagers and in turn try to be like them. For example when they grow up they want to help out in the community with this same activity.
You would be amazed how much the kids in my community look up to the teenagers. I live in a very small community of about 2,000 people. So everyone knows one another and usually knows what all the teenagers are into around here. By the teenagers getting involved with the younger kids could help them out in the long run.

   After School Agape aims to provide a place for the children that live on Bay Street in Berlin, MD to go when they get home from school.  The activities that the children participate in are aimed to build teamwork, allow them to express themselves, and also teach them about career opportunities.  The children and I have formed very close relationships.  Everyday at After School Agape is different.  I love the kids I work with and I enjoy watching them grow.  It is a good feeling when you know that you are making a difference in a child’s life.  The children range in age from 4 to 10 years old and all come from single-parent homes.      After School Agape began in the last week of September in 2007.  Held in the Agape building (a ministry for single parents) it runs Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 until 5:00 and has a roster of over 25 children.  During the first week of the program the children enrolled completed activities to allow everyone to get to know each other.  Since then we have done many projects including Halloween houses, Thanksgiving Indian vests, and recently completed our long-term project of creating our own newspaper.  To create our own newspaper, I used my knowledge of journalism and taught the children about open-ended and close-ended questions.  Then we went over how to conduct an interview.  Finally the children interviewed each other for the feature section of the newspaper.  They also drew pictures for the arts and style section, and wrote news stories to go along with pictures we had taken at the program.     They have also participated in relay races and other team-building activities.  Every day that the program is held snack is provided as well as homework help.  A few weeks ago I held a movie night at Agape for the kids.  We watched two movies together and had snacks.  I am currently trying to start a Girl Scout troop at Agape.   We just held a Christmas party this past weekend which included breakfast, crafts, and a movie.      We also just completed our very own Christmas movie where the children acted out different traditional Christmas scenes.  We have completed Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  In order to do this the children had to practice and learn to cooperate with each other on a whole new level.

“Healthy Cultures, Healthy Girls” will begin to challenge and address the lack of culturally appropriate and healthy food options by providing dynamic educational activities to girls and young women who live in three underserved, low-income, urban communities in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. This project will be incorporated into the Young Women’s Mentoring Program, a year-round youth development program focused on building the employment and leadership skills of young women and the self-esteem of younger girls.

Our vision for the “Healthy Cultures, Healthy Girls” project is to teach female youth to respect each other and their differences, to enjoy trying new cultural foods while learning about nutrition, and to increase their level of physical activity. Support from the Del Monte “Do Something Good For You” program would provide the opportunity for 70 girls, ages 7-13, and 12 Youth Mentors, ages 14-18, from three Minneapolis and St. Paul communities to experience local markets and ethnic grocery stores where they will learn to buy, prepare, and cook healthy food and snacks for their group sessions.

VOCAL is a student-run organization that advocates for and empowers those who are often considered voiceless. We work with the cooperation, knowledge and experience of these people to provide the logistical and financial resources necessary to improve their quality of life.

Our current project is to improve the quality of life for the residents of Waltham, a city that has become a second home to many students. To accomplish this, we are assisting in the ongoing project to convert the Prospect Hill Terrace Apartment’s Day Care Center into a new community center.

The three goals of this campaign are (1) to raise awareness of the need for out of school youth programs and affordable housing, (2) to raise money for our ongoing project to convert the Prospect Hill Terrace Apartment’s Day Care Center into a new community center and (3) to strengthen the relationship between Brandeis University, Bentley College and the Waltham community.

We are planning to raise awareness of and money for the much needed after-school programs and affordable housing through a charity spoken word concert called VOCAL 2008: SPEAKING UP FOR THE FUTURE. The show featuring an all-star lineup of award winning poets of all ages is scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2008, in the 747-seat Spingold Theater at Brandeis University. In addition, we have started a letter writing campaign to ask for the support and approval of the city of Waltham for the conversion of the Day Care center and to further provide awareness of the issues listed above. Lastly, before and after the show, VOCAL members will hold writing and poetry workshops for youth across the Waltham community.

We plan to use the proceeds from this event to work in conjunction with the Community Engaged Learning Program at Brandeis, the Bentley College, the Waltham Alliance to Create Housing (WATCH), Waltham Public Housing, Community Service Department, and the Brandeis Pluralism Alliance towards converting the Prospect Hill Terrace Apartment’s Day Care Center into a community center.

I started Computers for Communities (CFC) in 2001 when I was 9 years old. First I acquired computers that were being discarded from a local school. Then I refurbished and distributed them to individuals in my community that could not afford to have a computer at home. What a great feeling to see the smiles on those kids' faces. I felt like I was Santa Claus! Since then, I have created a non-profit organization that helps other groups do the same thing: locate discarded computers, refurbish them, and distribute them to those in need. To date, we have distributed over 1,000 computers! Computers for Communities is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Our goal is to help groups of people in all states start their own local CFC - to take computers from their community, refurbish them and redistribute them to the needy in their own community. Our current endeavors include: * Providing technology training to students, senior citizens and the economically disadvantaged. * I am working with a maximum security prison - the prisoners there learn IT skills in a computer shop, while they refurbish computers for us to distribute to Hartford school children. They gain an employable skill, and feel a sense of hope for their future. They have also told me that they get satisfaction that they are helping others, and are being relevant to society. * Provide training and distribute low-cost computers for the new Hartford Wireless Initiative. The city is creating free wireless Internet access available to its residents. We are helping residents get computers they can afford, and teach them how to use them. * We recently got a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create an after-school and summer program for inner-city kids to get them interested in IT. The 3-year program will not only teach kids different IT skills (including computer architecture), but the students will set up a community outreach center in which they will provide IT services and low-cost computers to Hartford residents. Vincent trained and mobilized a diverse groupof parents and college students to provide more than 40,000 hours of after-school tutoring, mentoring and summer learning activities for over 400 low-income children and families in Washington, D.C.
