Gay Rights

the problem:

Gay marriage is banned in certian U.S states. People are not being treated the same as others just because they like different things. Gay's are being judged.

why it's important:

Because everyone is a person & shouldn't be treated any differently. Why can straight couples get married wherever, but gay couples have to go to certian U.S. states just to get married. It's not fair treatment.

the plan of action:

Supporting LGBT. Everywhere. Unbanning gay marriage laws.

how you can get involved:

By also supporting. Not judging. & Realizing that everyone is a person with feelings. Ask your High School where you can get information on these topics.

Proposition 8 Declared Unconsitutional

Today was a pivotal moment for same-sex marriage. Prop 8, which banned the practice in the state of California was deemed unconsitutional by an appeals court. Here are some things you should know about prop 8 and this decision.

the problem:

Homeless youth is becoming an epidemic in the state of Utah. Our high school's Gay-Straight Alliance decided to hold a school wide winter Fundraiser to raise money, food, hygiene, and winter supplies for Utah's Homeless Youth Resource Center. 43% of homeless youth in Utah from the ages of 14-22 identify as LGBTQ.

why it's important:

This is important to our Gay-Straight Alliance because we are dedicated to raising awareness about and helping the LGBTQ community in Utah. After learning about the life of kids who visit the HYRC, our club was inspired to do something to help these kids that are no different than us.

the plan of action:

We set up a table at lunch with posters on the HYRC and what students could donate. We also sold candy cane grams to raise money for the HYRC. We raised around $200 in cash and in supplies. Before we delivered our final donations to the HYRC, we went to our local Kmart an informed them of the project we were doing. They donated around 80 beanies and 60 pairs of gloves to us that we added to our donation pile.

how you can get involved:

Contact Utah's HYRC to donate or volunteer by phone at (801) 363-9414 or online at http://www.voaut.org/Services/Homeless-Outreach--Housing-Programs/Homele...

the problem:

Inequality within the LGBTQ community.

why it's important:

I'm gay, but I'm not doing this just for myself, it's for everyone who is struggling. I am lucky to have grown up in a rather accepting community, and I want to help others earn the acceptance they deserve. Many inequalities exists within the LGBT community, everyone needs to take a stand, because people united can never be defeated.

the plan of action:

This has been an ongoing project since I was very young. I've reached out to people through events, rallies, speeches, meetings, volunteer work, etc. I plan to continue my work as I have been, doing as much as I can to help others and get others involved.

how you can get involved:

Make a video, volunteer at your local LGBTQ community center, canvass for equality in your own town, make an event, speak publicly about it, become educated, do an appropriate school project involving LGBT rights, attend parades/rallies, vote for equality, campaign for equality, and be a role model for others.

the problem:

We believe that one of the biggest challenges facing young organizers is navigating internal group dynamics. Whether it is teens, college students, volunteers, parents or community members fighting together for a specific cause, there are inevitably moments in these struggles when group members are faced with difficult decisions and potential conflicts. Often times these complex internal dynamics can be the biggest barrier a group may face when working on a campaign or project.

Through workshops on non-violent communication, consensus decision making and non-hierarchical leadership, we hope to promote alternative strategies and tools for organizing at the grassroots level. Our goal is to alleviate much of the stress and anxiety that can come from working in a group setting, and provide creative techniques for collaborative work.

We also believe that the way we are with each other reflects the way we are in the world. By this we mean that if we can radically change our relationships to be more harmonious, peaceful and cooperative, we have the capacity to create entire communities in the same way.

why it's important:

The members of The Collective first met in 2007 while participating in a study abroad program. There were 28 students on an epic journey across the world, and establishing effective and democratic group norms was a key component of our trip. For us, the exploration of these issues came first out of necessity. In order to survive our nine months together, we had to devise ways to interact, make decisions and handle conflict.
It was during this time abroad that many of us discovered the importance of collaborative decision making and ways in which non-hierarchical leadership can create a space where all voices are respected and heard. Ultimately, by the end of our time together, we were deeply committed to working with each other and others on developing new processes for communicating and organizing in groups.

the plan of action:

Since 2010, we have taught numerous workshops to college students, young adults, small progressive nonprofits, and co-ops in the region. We have promoted our work through word of mouth and other networks with which we are familiar.

In addition to teaching in-person workshops, we have written, designed and published materials on communication and community-building techniques.

With a seed grant of $500, we could significantly expand the content and scope of our workshop, as well as produce a more comprehensive resource guide and workbook on consensus and alternative forms of decision making.

how you can get involved:

Others can be involved by attending our workshops and teaching others! We believe that the material and content of our workshops and publications should be widely distributed, and that everyone can benefit from these resources.

If others have an interest in teaching the materials with members of the collective, and getting directly involved, we would be happy to discuss that possibility.

Many LGBT youth have doubted their talents and their confidence is affected because of their doubts. Therefore, I want to help the talented queer youth to showcase their abilities. I want to have an event that can help them build confidence and possibly make them discover their interest.

why it's important:

This is important to me because many youth, like myself, are eager to perform anywhere. We simply enjoy having an enviroment where we can be as fierce as possible without being judged as well as inspire others. We dont have many opportunities as youth to showcase our talent.

the plan of action:

I want to make a Queer Talent Show! I want to have the Queer youth showcase talents whether it's singing, dancing, drag, etc. Have a huge event that can possibly spark continous events regarding youth performing.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by volunteering or being one of the performers.

the problem that i trying to solve is hat people out there in the world are being discriminated by who they are or what they do. Others try to solve problems by themselves but with the help of others they will move on but at times it can be impossible to live because the same reason happens over and over again. im trying to prove a point that by judging a book cover by its cover is not right.

the problem:

There is a small community of gay and lesbian teens hidden in Bend,Oregon afraid to "come out" because of the harsh things kids say in our local schools. This should NOT be a problem in my community. Is it wrong for kids to be who they are? No. Is it horrible that teens these days are harsh and cruel to the homosexual community? Yes. I believe that EVERYONE should get equal rights, no matter what, my community deserves it. We need to be proud of who we are and never regret our decision to tell the ones we love. So this is me, changing my community, one teen at a time.

why it's important:

When I was thirteen, I told my family and friends that I was gay. It was one of the hardest but best things I have EVER done. Some, it didnt even phase them to look at me differently, but for others, they left me in the dark and never looked back. I see others at my school that I know are gay, lesbian, and transgender, but are afraid to tell others because of the rude, harsh, and mean comments people use on a dailey basis. This hurst me inside because I know they wish inside that they could be free and be proud to be gay. People in this world care so much about someones sexuality that they let the real problems slip through their fingers. In the end, everyone one deserves to be free. I am free.

the plan of action:

I just want teens to see that we support them. That there is someone right there, beside them, willing to listen. I want our schools to be proud of EVERYONE. Not just the jocks, the cheerleaders, the student council members, and the honor students, but EVERYONE. No matter someones personal preference, school is a place where teens should be able to learn and not worry if their staring because of who you are. My schools need to promote everything. Not just the football games, the civil war, or the homecoming dance. They need to tell others about things that matter. Like bullying and how common suicide is in our school. I want to spread the word and teach others, gay and straight, what really being gay feels like and how we arent any different from others. I just want us to be equal.

how you can get involved:

Our school refuses to help me make my dream come true. They always answer with some lame excuse like "oh, that extra money is going to the cheerleaders for new uniforms", even though the year before they had new ones made. We need the support from you in order to move on from this point. Without your help, the kids in my schools are going to hurt inside and get bullied everyday because no one spoke up for them. I will never be silenced and I will always fight for my cause.
