Shocking reality about e-waste recycling

So 60 Minutes can be a little stodgy, but last night they debuted a shocking piece about the e-waste industry. E-waste, if you don't know, is the term for old computers, cell phones and other electronics that are filled with highly toxic materials.

Thought you could recycle that pizza box? Think again!

Figuring out which plastics you can recycle can be confusing. Most of us feel like we’re being earth-conscious when we toss something in the recycling bin, right? Well, it turns out you just might be doing more harm than good. How so? Fact is that if you include some unrecyclable items in your bin, you run the risk of the entire batch being re-routed to the nearest trash dump.

Via Yahoo Green, here’s a list of some common items that don't belong in the recycling bin, no matter what your zip code:

Eco-kids keeping parents on their toes

Immersed in environmentalism at school, in houses of worship and even via popular culture, a growing army of “eco-kids” are holding their parents accountable at home, reports the New York Times.

“I have very, very environmentally conscious children — more so than me, I’m embarrassed to say,” said Ms. Ross, a social worker in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. “They’re on my case about getting a hybrid car. They want me to replace all the light bulbs in the house with energy-saving bulbs.”

Ten greenest colleges in the nation

America’s institutions of higher learning are doing more than just molding and inspiring the bright minds of students. Many are also setting admirable examples of sustainable solutions to myriad problems.

Pressure is on to recycle water filters

Brita’s “Responsible Water” campaign shows a woman on a treadmill with a disposable water bottle by her side, with the tagline, “30 minutes on the treadmill, forever in a landfill.” The problem is that water filters cannot be recycled.

Prius not so green... for now

The Toyota Prius has been named the Green Car of the Year for the last five years by Consumer Reports, and the EPA says it gets a whopping 46 miles per gallon.
With gas prices so insanely high, the hybrid appears to be a great way for a driver to be friendly to the environment and lower her carbon footprint, but a recent report argues otherwise.

the problem:

Trees have been around for many thousands of years. Not everybody knows that trees are an important componant of the earth. They help produce oxygen, while reducing carbon dioxide. They also moderate ground temperatures.
I love just driving throuh the countryside, surrounded by trees of all different types and sizes, and to me, nothing is more peaceful.
This project isnt about raising money for a specific cause, its about simply helping the environment.
Its really easy to help the environment, and you can do so everyday by doing just a number of small things that wont even take up 5 minutes. Start by planting a few trees in your back garden and by recycling items such as paper and disposable coffee cups that you get in McDonalds. As more and more people do this, fewer trees will be cut down.Did you know that if every issue of the New York times for one day was recycled, 75,000 trees would be saved. As you walk along the pavement and you see litter, just pick it up, litter can cause fires and be eaten by animals, and it also wont decompose

The 29th Day Preventive Task Force is a Student Activist Group that is still in it's first year. Our slogan is Discussion - Education - Action. We seek to make our campus, our community, and our world a better place through several programs. Some of our efforts include:

Recycling Efforts - from picking up trash and recycling the salvagable materials to encouraging our peers, professors, and campus staff to recycle.

Educational Efforts - through phamplets, lectures, and direct contact at campus events, we're getting the message out to our peers and our comunity about recycling, saving energy, and living greener, cleaner lives. Also, we will be holding forums for college as well as local high school students, to generate dialogue about the issues, as well as brain-storming solutions and ideas for future projects.

We want to fight environmental un-awareness and passive activism, which have become all to common. We want to education our generation and the next, because the world is in our hands - it's up to us if the problems slip through our fingers.

If you would like more information about our group, or are interested in establishing a branch on your own campus, please contact the Founder and President, Sara Caller, at 29thdaySAU@gmail.com. Thank you!
