I am a Peace Corps Volunteer in Trusesti, Romania teaching at a K-8th school. I am searching for help with a project to increase awareness and education about the environment.

In my community, streets and sewage systems are filled with garbage, plastic is overused then burned and recycling is not a common practice. Even today the effects of an industrial communist regime can be seen by the low priority given to the environment and lack of understanding the consequences of ones actions in relation to the environment.

In recognition of a need for change the school is engaging in a year long endeavor in partnership with the Mayors Office to increase awareness and hopefully begin to change the education and mentality of the kids and teenagers within the community.

Our goal at the school is to educate about biodiversity as well as humanities impact on nature today. The best way to demonstrate this is to not only teach in the classroom but also through activities. Therefore the project is composed of three parts: teaching basic knowledge in the classroom, active projects and participation outside, and publicity within the community.

Our future plans involve the kids participating in 7 international activities such as Biodiversity Month, Recycling Week and World Water Day in which we will complete lessons and projects geared toward various areas of the environment. In addition each class will "adopt" the main street in front of the school for a month during which time they will be in charge of cleaning up that area.

In addition students will be planting trees, flowers and other flora in green spaces within in the community and throughout the year depending upon the season. Garbage bins with signs will be placed in more convenient easily accessible locations and next June the students will then present projects to their parents and other community members about what they have learned.

The entire project is costing about $5000 to complete. All of the funding will go to buying supplies (garbage bins, shovels, ect.) and flora (trees, bushes, flowers). The Mayors office is helping with a small amount of money but seeing as we are in rural Romania our resources are limited. A Peace Corps small fund grant will also be completed to aid in the project however money can not be received until December and we need extra money to start planting in September with the start of the school year. Therefore, I am looking for any help I can get to keep this project on schedule.

I strongly believe that combining activism with knowledge will allow and help kids to develop the right tools for making the best decisions when it comes to their environment.

Project Description

Blankies For Babies is a non-profit charity organization started in 2006 to gather new and lightly used blankies as well as make new blankies for infants, toddlers, and small children who need them. Blankies For Babies has reached infants and small children throughout Oahu, Hawaii and Albuquerque, New Mexico and is spreading throughout Oklahoma, Maryland, Idaho, and several other states.

Our Red, White, and Blue Blankie Party will be held in June 2008 in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. We will be taking donations of any blankies of those colors and of patriotic themes as well as making no-sew fleece blankies. These blankies will be collected and donated to Tripler Army Medical Center as well as various Family Support Organizations around Oahu and across the country.

Project Description

Just over two months ago, some friends and I started to notice that many of the kids in our community spent their days trapped in boring apartment complexes with nothing to do but play video games and get pregnant. We quickly recognized the need to show them something different; but not just anything different. We thought that maybe if we could put together a program to show them that there are more things to do than push buttons, and better things to look forward to than an unplanned pregnancy. A fun, safe, healthy place for kids to come on Wednesdays after school was developed. We called it Kids Club. For the past two months we have been meeting at Kids Club for a couple hours of enjoying each other, running around on a grass field, playing games, and showing each other that there are things we can hope for. Last week we piled into three, fifteen-passenger vans and spent the day in Joshua Tree National Park. Here, lower-income youth got to experience a whole new world. For many of them it was the farthest they had been away from home. As each child begins to realize the hope they can hold on to and the dreams they can begin to develop, we are finding that their friends are coming too! In a matter of a couple short months, over thirty kids have come to be a part of Kids Club.

Project Description

C.A.F.E. is a community space that is being created in downtown Fresno. It is a space dedicated to youth activism and empowerment, available to any activist in Fresno who needs a space for a project, workshop, movie night or lecture. We are making this a safe space for everyone, with an emphasis on addressing sexism, homophopia, classism, speciesism, racism, and ageism in Fresno.

The projects currently being worked on are Food Not Bombs, Community Free Grocery, Fresno Needle Exchange, a community garden, a Womyn's night, a self-defense class, and a zine library. We have hosted animal rights and earth rights lectures, indigenous rights events, a mental health group, a consent workshop, drug and alcohol free music events, and transgender day of rememberance. Our future projects include a bike clinic, a free school, expanding our zine library, and more movie nights.

This is a completely grassroots project, with almost everyone involved under age 25. Volunteers and donations are always welcome. We are trying to purchase the building and expand our community.

The purpose behind Parent's Knight Out is to provide the parents of elementary aged children a night where they could go out and see a movie, or go to dinner, or go grocery shopping, whatever they want and just enjoy sometime without their children. The children will come to Oak Creek High School for many fun activities such as arts and crafts, basketball, pizza, poms, etc. It will be a safe, fun enviorment for the children, and the parents can spend a few hours on their own.

Students from Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School will go to a homeless shelter and surprise a group of children with a day of fun to help lift their spirits. We will have games, arts & crafts, face painting, music and much more.

As part of The Campus Kitchen at Gonzaga University's celebration of Global Youth Service Day, the leadership team and other spectacular volunteers around the Gonzaga campus will be getting together to get our hands dirty and make some salads...at the same time! That's right, we will be planting salads. The project will involve lots of fun, leafy greens, and other necessary parts of salads(a couple veggies and some herbs) that will be planted in large pots and given to special agencies and shelters throughout the Spokane community to help ensure that access to healthy and fresh produce is readily available with an easy snip!

In addition, CKGU will partner with sodexho to host nutrition workshops for members of the community in need. The workshops will serve to teach recipients of the salad bowls fun and inexpensive ways to use fresh produce in cooking and how to be healthier and more cost effective.

Turning Point Youth Collective is a non-profit youth organization in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Our mission:
To provide the Daytona Beach area with resources and space for producing all-ages music events and creating music related cultural products; empowering youth through alternative leadership development opportunities including a youth-directed model encouraging leadership through open governance practices and erasing the line between the people serving and being served; to actively improve the social well-being of Daytona Beach area youth through civic engagement.

We have been in our planning stages since Jan 2006 and faced some difficulty in remaining after the original organizer moved out of state to continue his college career at Amherst in Boston, MA. Around that same time a new organizer picked up where he left off and January 2008 saw an active start to the collective.

Focusing on all-ages music events, youth empowerment, and civic engagement, Turning Point Youth Collective has already gained wide support from youth, community members in the arts, civic leaders, other local non-profit and grass-root organizations, and businesses alike.

Our first large scale event to introduce ourselves to the community will be Saturday June 7, 2008. "Endless Summer Fest" is an all day, all-ages, all local, free, community and arts event, organized largely in part for and by youth ages 16-25--the first of its kind in the area!

There are 20 confirmed music acts, 10 artists, and a number of skill shares, including a pottery wheel demonstration, and sewing workshop.

The opportunity to not only give back in such a fun and positive way to our community and its youth, but also to provide future leadership and creative opportunities for the youth in this area, combined with a love for the arts is the driving force behind our organization.
