The life expectancy there is 40 years, and in 2003, 17,000 deaths occurred due to AIDS. This constant devastation of the population has resulted in many households run entirely by children, and the number of orphans grows every day.

Sterile Feral

Currently, in Winnemucca Nevada, there are colonies of feral cats living throughout the city. The animal shelter in the area will only take dogs due to the amount of wild cats and difficulty in finding homes for them. These cats spread disease and often live in near starving and inhumane conditions. Without change, these cats will continue to breed and the population will continue to grow exponentially.

The Daytona Playhouse

For many years now, The Daytona Beach area has been immersed in expensive tourist traps that were meant to boost the economy. Unfortunatley, over time, this has not been successful, and the locals have had to face their fair share of let downs financially. The Daytona Playhouse gives the community an opportunity to overlook this in their lives and allows them to be apart of something wether they are in the audience, behined the scenes, or on stage providing laughter to the fellow community members that have fallen under hard times.

Teen Summer Service Project

This, the first, chapter of TSSP, would be in Baton Rouge, LA. Service projects would range from Random Acts of Kindness (RAK, see below) to fundraising to awareness campaigns to hands-on service. Causes would be decided by members on a weekly basis.

Environmental Education Through Schools

I am a Peace Corps Volunteer in Trusesti, Romania teaching at a K-8th school. I am searching for help with a project to increase awareness and education about the environment.

In my community, streets and sewage systems are filled with garbage, plastic is overused then burned and recycling is not a common practice. Even today the effects of an industrial communist regime can be seen by the low priority given to the environment and lack of understanding the consequences of ones actions in relation to the environment.

Blankies For Babies is a non-profit charity organization started in 2006 to gather new and lightly used blankies as well as make new blankies for infants, toddlers, and small children who need them. Blankies For Babies has reached infants and small children throughout Oahu, Hawaii and Albuquerque, New Mexico and is spreading throughout Oklahoma, Maryland, Idaho, and several other states.

Just over two months ago, some friends and I started to notice that many of the kids in our community spent their days trapped in boring apartment complexes with nothing to do but play video games and get pregnant. We quickly recognized the need to show them something different; but not just anything different. We thought that maybe if we could put together a program to show them that there are more things to do than push buttons, and better things to look forward to than an unplanned pregnancy. A fun, safe, healthy place for kids to come on Wednesdays after school was developed.

C.A.F.E. is a community space that is being created in downtown Fresno. It is a space dedicated to youth activism and empowerment, available to any activist in Fresno who needs a space for a project, workshop, movie night or lecture. We are making this a safe space for everyone, with an emphasis on addressing sexism, homophopia, classism, speciesism, racism, and ageism in Fresno.
