Our principal of 16 years retired last spring. While here at the school, she slowly disposed of all art, and other creative activities. The entire focus was on pencil and paper tasks. Our kindergarten students have no art easels (or other thought provoking creative toys for that matter). We would like to purchase two easels in order for the children to have an opportunity to develop their creativity. Each easel will allow four children to paint at a time, giving eight spots each morning and lunch recess.

I am the owner/founder of the education firm Lyfe Productives, based in Oakland, CA, a beautiful community that faces many challenges. Since the mid 1980’s drugs, violence, and a continuous lack of resources have plagued this city leaving many of our youth marginalized and in need of inspiration. I’m especially invested in creating a popular culture of consciousness and meeting the challenge of finding ways to make both standard and alternative education provocative for young people growing up in the inner-city.

The Phoenix is an independent news magazine for students at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, Connecticut. The Phoenix was originally aimed at a readership of high school students, but subscribers now include a healthy dose of parents and teachers as well.
