Environmental Mother's Day Tips
Consider getting your mom a green gift for her day this year. You’ll impress her with your environmental savviness and will be doing Mother Nature a favor.
Do Something’s Shopping Mall has tons of options on the eco-friendly items listed below (and 5% of the proceeds benefits Do Something!).
- What woman doesn’t love make-up? Show mom she can brighten up her face and look great naturally without harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives or parabens.
- Awaken mom’s palate with organic teas. The powerful benefits of tea are fast making it the preferred health drink of millions. Make your mom one of them.
- Is mommy a chocolate lover? Make sure you get her the fair-trade kind so you know that farming families earn a price for their product that is adequate to meet their basic human needs.
- Getting her a new scent? Opt for natural perfume. It’s a popular gift this time of year, but the average fragrance is a total chemical cocktail – not something anyone would want all over your body. Gross!
- Make her a meal… Her favorite breakfast – in bed! Just be sure to buy local and organic. Buying local foods saves on the transportation, energy, and packaging it takes to bring produce from faraway while also supporting local farmers.
- While you’re shopping for groceries, buy your Mom a cloth bag for the next time she goes to the market. It’s much more environmentally friendly than plastic or paper bags and more durable.
- Spend some alone time. All those April showers brought May flowers so take mom for a walk in a local wildlife reserve or park. You can even surprise her by packing a picnic or snack… organic and local, of course.
- Is mom a clothes or accessory lover? Help her look her best by stopping by a local thrift store and picking something vintage. That’s so in this season and the plus side is you’re saving natural resources by buying used.
- Are there aromatic candles always burning around your house? Buy (or make!) mom a natural candle. Soy candles are eco-friendly and smell great. And if you want to put the extra effort into making one yourself, there are tons of websites with simple and easy steps to help you do it.
- Give her green flowers. No, not weeds or clovers, but healthy flowers which aren’t doused in chemicals to maintain their unblemished appearance.
- No matter what you decide to buy, you know you have to include a card… make it a recycled one. Buy recycled paper and create your own greeting just for your mom (Aww!)… Or send mom a musical e-card. It’s earth-friendly and there’s no doubt your Mom will smile (or hum along!) at the cute animation.
