Tips to Stop Text Bullying

Texting might get you study help or a Friday night date, but no emodicon or punctuation is gonna help you deal with someone harassing you. DoSomething.org spoke with clinical psychologist Dr. Jerry Weichman, who deals with teen issues, and asked him what to do when people send disrespect you through text.

What are the most common behaviors that teens display when they bully via texting?

Name calling and threats are the most common. Teens will also conduct what I call “the set up”. This occurs when they win an individual’s trust and, in confidence, receive private pictures of that person or acquire their secrets or opinions of others through texting. When there is a fight or a falling out occurs, they then forward the private info to others.

What should a person do if he or she receives threatening texts?

Do not respond. It doesn’t matter if you are attacking back, trying to clarify, or even questioning. Attacking back can come back to get you if [that person reports it]. If the harassment continues, contact your school administrators or local police department. It’s nice to have a bodyguard in life…take advantage of it.

What should a teen do if someone is sharing private photos him or her?

Contact the school administration or local authorities. They have the authority to shut it down before it spreads and goes viral. I’ve seen situations like this contained really quickly if you act quickly.

If a friend sends a concerning text (i.e."I just can't go on like this anymore,"), what should a teen do?

Notify both their parents and their school. Teens are “first responders” when it comes to texting and the internet. Teens also typically hint or threaten suicide 2-3 times before attempting it. You could have a very high likelihood of saving someone’s life. Some don’t report because they’re afraid that individual will be mad at them. Trust me, they will thank you later for saving their life.
