You can still do something around the election
It’s crunch time. There are just days left before the most historic election in decades and, believe it or not, there are still plenty of ways you can get involved… besides voting of course. Here’s a list of 11 creative things you can do regardless of your age.
- Download a free copy of Michael Moore’s “Slacker Uprising” about his 42 day journey across America to help turn out a record number of young voters and others who had never voted before.
- Go see the film “W.” Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory.
- Create a mashup of your favorite political moments of the race… or of the countless hilarious skits of comedians parodying the candidates and their running mates. Get some how-to tips at the Mash Up Awards website.
- How about holding a mock election at your school. It’s a great way to educate people on the intricacies of the democratic process, plus it’s fun! Here’s how.
- Make calls for the candidate of your choice. It’s easy and you can do it from home. For Obama's site click here, for McCain's click here.
- Show up at a local campaign office -- they’re all over the place -- and volunteer.
- In the NYC area? Join Josh Stone and ?uestLove of The Roots at HeadCount’s “Get Out the Vote Party” on the eve of the election. And if you’re too far away (or can’t get one of only 500 available tix), you can enjoy the music live as it unfolds on iClips.net.
- Put together an election night watch party for you and your friends. Spice it up with a ballot competition. Take it beyond “Who will win the election?,” try deeper questions like, “Who will take Florida?,” etc.
- Volunteer as a poll worker on Election Day. You can help voters sign in, work with the voting machinery and keep things organized at the polls. Find opportunities by looking up your local area at Project Vote Smart's website.
- You can also just show up at the polls to show support for your candidate. Don’t be afraid to carry signs and use your lungs – be loud! But be careful, most states have laws saying you must stay 25 to 50 feet away from doors with campaign materials… and that includes your fave candidate t-shirt!
- Get out the vote! Remind your friends and family to vote. Call them, e-mail them, send them text messages, make it your facebook and/or myspace status. Whatever it takes!
Now get on out there and show the world why you’re considered the most politically savvy generation in the history of the U.S.!
