Open mic events are a great way showcase artistic talent. It is often a unique opportunity for people to perform music, read poetry, or even do stand up comedy.
Find a Space
Consider your school auditorium, local coffee shops or your community theater. Remind coffee shops and places that serve food that you will be bringing in customers!
Advertise!
Good publicity is really important, because not only are you looking for an audience, but you're looking for performers as well. Make flyers, email to listserves, create an event on facebook, be creative and get the word out.
Get a Good Lineup
Have people sign up to perform. You can limit time or not. Tell performers to bring their friends and family.
Keep it Moving
You'll need an MC. Either you or an outgoing friend can do it. You want somebody that can introduce each performer, and encourage applause and get support from the audience. (Many people are probably in front of an audience for the first time so they’ll need a little extra support!) If the are funny and have a lot of energy that is best so that people stay interested.
Say Thanks
That night make sure to thank the space providers (if in a coffee shop, for example, encourage people to buy a coffee or tea.)
