Be Captain of a Relay for Life team!

Want to join a huge effort to combat cancer? The check out the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

Relay for Life is an event which brings people together into teams at a school, park, or fairgrounds for the night to take turns walking or running laps. Each team keeps at least one teammate on the track at a time. The event is designed to celebrate cancer survivors and raise awareness and money for cancer research. So become a team captain and recruit your friends and help combat cancer.

Step 1

Find a Relay for Live going on near you. Go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life website where you can enter your zip code to find an event in your neighborhood.

Step 2

Set your goals. Figure out how many people you want to sign up for your team. And set a fundraising goal. Also, figure out what kind of and what kind of big fundraising events you and your teammates can do together before the relay.

Step 3

Recruit friends to join your team. Ask friends, classmates, neighbors, anyone! Have them set personal fundraising goals, and see what ideas they have for fundraisers for your team.

Step 4

Fundraise. Set up a few events, like a car wash, a bake sale, or ask local businesses if they will set a can next to their registers for patrons to drop their extra change. Try to schedule at least one big team event, and make sure everyone has a task. [Click here] for some fundraising suggestions.

Step 5

Attend your Relay for Life. Hand in your donations to workers at the relay. Set up camp! You’ll be there all night, so you’ll want to bring a tent, maybe a sleeping bag to rest, and of course some snacks. Also, make sure you keep at least one team member on the track at a time.

Don’t want to be a team captain?

No problem! Find a relay near you, and sign up, and click the option to join a team instead of starting one. If one of your friends is already a captain, ask if you can join their team.
