Start a club team
Not the star quarterback of your school football team? Want to get into a sport but there aren’t any teams or organizations around you? Start a club! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just find a few people who are interested, set up a schedule, and get started!
Step 1
What sport? Decide what sport your club will be dedicated too. Or, try several different things. Maybe each week you can try something new.
Some sports ideas:
| Running |
Volleyball | Baseball |
Soccer |
| Basketball |
Ultimate Frisbee |
Tennis |
Ice/Roller Hockey |
| Swimming |
Touch Football |
Lacrosse |
Step 2
Find people. Tell people your idea and spread the word. Write down names and contact info for people who are interested. If you can get email addresses for everyone, you can start a mass email so everyone can be in touch with one another. Be sure to ask them for ideas, suggestions, and how they would like the club to work. Ask what times work best for people.
Step 3
Find a place. Where will you meet? If you need space such as courts or gyms, ask local schools, gyms, or other organizations (like the YMCA) when they have free space. As if any sort of waiver or agreements needs to be signed in order to use those spaces. Also, try to find a place that people can easily get to. If the gym you are using is near the school, it will be easy for people to get there for practice. And of course, you don't want to pick a place 20 minutes away by car, especially if people can't drive.
Step 4
Set up a schedule. Will you meet once a week? Twice a week? On the weekends? At night? Figure out what works best for everyone. Try to make it consistent, and don’t change too often. Maybe you can meet twice a week so if people can’t make one day, they can make the other. Make a calendar that you can print or photocopy to hand out, so everyone knows when and where to meet.
Step 5
Have fun! Stay active and keep recruiting people. Tell people who are involved to tell others. Keep it light and easy, too. You wouldn’t want to drive people away by having really intense and competitive get-togethers.
