Global Warming Vocabulary
Carbon Dioxide
is more commonly known as CO2, and is a gas found in the atmosphere. It is created when humans breathe, or during combustion, such as in a car or other engine. CO2 is a heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere that reflects heat back down into the Earth.
The Greenhouse Effect
is when the sun warms the Earth and atmosphere, and when heat trapping gasses such as CO2 and methane trap heat. The
problem comes when too much CO2 and methane is present, causing too much heat to be trapped.
Emissions
are when substances are discharged into the air, such as from a car or other combustion process.
Aerosols
are compacted gasses contained usually in metal that are released via a button. The use of aerosols release a high amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
Recycling
is when you use renewable materials that can be reproduced and reused for other purposes, such as how plastic can be recycled as well as paper.
Global Warming
is the rapid increase of the Earth's overall temperature due to the release of too much Co2, methane and other heat trapping gases.
Biofuel
is any fuel that derives from biomass - recently living organisms or their metabolic by-products, such as manure from cows. Unlike other natural resources such as petroleum, coal and nuclear fuels, biofuels are a renewable energy source. They have the advantage of being 'carbon neutral'. This means that although burning them releases carbon into the atmosphere, they have already absorbed that carbon as plants. For this reason they are championed by environmentalists as a way to reduce CO2 released into the atmosphere by using them to replace non-renewable energy sources.
