STARTING YOUR OWN NOT-FOR-PROFIT Moderator: Jordyn Wells, Do Something, Grants Program Director; Panelists: Divine Bradley, Team Revolution, Founder, Lindsay Hyde, Strong Girls, Strong Women, Founder, Jacob Komar Computers for Communities, FounderThe panelists will share their experiences and their own successes and challenges in forming a unique not-for-profit. They will discuss how they’ve worked to address specific needs in their own communities and how these practices can be applied to your project/organization. This is a great session if you are trying to decide to create your own organization or partner with another, existing organization.
SESSION 2 (10:45-11:40)
MANAGING AND RECRUITING VOLUNTEERSSpeaker: Lindsay Hyde, Strong Girls, Strong Women, Founder and Executive Director
Actively engaging volunteers is essential for the success of any not-for-profit project or organization, but is especially important for those just getting started! Enthusiastic volunteers can open doors, bring creative solutions to the sticky problems, and help your organization extend its impact and growth. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of creating and effectively managing volunteers at all levels. The workshop will highlight common challenges that founders of community action ventures often encounter in recruiting others and offer a variety of solutions.
SESSION 3 (1:35-2:30)
ONLINE COMMUNICATIONSSpeakers: George Weiner, Do Something, CTO
George will discuss how to best represent your organization or project on the web. They will highlight the importance of knowing your audience, maintaining relevance to your organization, consistency to your brand and overall messaging. They will discuss how to effectively use social networks like Facebook, Youtube, MySpace and Twitter to convey your message and build supporters.
SESSION 4 (2:40-3:35)
PUBLIC RELATIONSSpeaker: David Barkoe, CarvePR, CEO
Tired of writing press releases that no one reads? Learn "how to" get noticed and get attention for your cause or project! Find out tips on increasing your media exposure, utilizing new forms of journalism and how to make the most out of the press you get.
PROJECT-PITCH PRACTICE (3:40-4:30)
INTERVIEWS: Atendees and Nancy Lublin, Do Something, CEOLearn how to answer the age-old question, “So, what do YOU do?” in a way that is clear, concise and compelling. Nancy will interview individuals and teach you the basics of an effective pitch. You will get to see her evaluate the success and weakness of several pitches.
