This project was created to involve children at a younger age in the interest of reading. There was three of us who came up with the project's idea. We wanted to get students interested in reading for their upcoming years especially for the Accelerated Reader that was mandatory in high school. We have done a lot of fun projects like having Santa Claus come to the library and read stories and take pictures, giving out bookmarks and free mini-books during the annual parade, we had a "READ 'em AND FEED 'em" competition in the Elementary schools where children read a bunch of books during "Read Week" (which the mayor declared for Gas City during Christmas Break". Then the top winners got a pizza party. We had bracelets made for students that said "I'm cool 'cuz reading is cool". They were all rainbow colors and we gave them out during the Elementary (Northview and Westview) School's carnivals. We have been trying to have fund raisers to raise funds for the community libraries to rebuild the children's centers and make them fun painted colors and have toys and a "Read Pad" to chill out in. So far we've earned some money to move the children's center on the main floor in the Gas City library. We have repainted to the Children's Center, each wall a different color, and have slowly added new furniture in. We are trying to slowly move more furniture in so we have a E.O.W.R (or we like to call it Eeyore). Even on weekends read. That is where we are going to have a breakfast chill out on Saturday mornings so instead of kids chilling out in front of the TV in the morning coming down to the Gas City library and reading with us!
