The Problem

An activity that has great importance to me is promoting cultural awareness and friendship on my high school campus. For this purpose I established a Slavic Club, which provides my schoolmates with the opportunity to expand their knowledge about different cultures beyond the classrooms experience. Likewise, it teaches young people to be open-minded and more tolerant to the world around us. The inspiration to create a Slavic Club was born when I learned how little my schoolmates knew about my native country, Russia, and how eager they were to learn more about its language and life. I opened the club to all students who wished to share their cultures with others. The club has made quite a splash on campus. We host international cooking classes; discover and promote foreign movies and writers; and discuss and connect historical and current events. On the whole, the establishment of this club has united students with different cultural backgrounds. I truly believe that the more we know about different cultures the better we can understand and appreciate diversity in our society. Moreover, the creation of the club has helped me to develop better leadership skills by involving schoolmates in the positive and insightful activities.
