This service project is in cooperation with
Kinship of Minneapolis. Kinship works to pair up young people withadult mentors throughout the year, but during the holidays connectsunderprivileged families with organizations who want to help acquire
Christmas gifts for these children.
OEC students and staff collect donations from individuals andbusinesses to purchase and wrap Christmas gifts for children whootherwise would go without. Parents, who have trouble providing giftsfor their children apply to Kinship, then write out lists of what thechildren have asked for, and Kinship passes those lists to us. What is
striking about the wish lists, is what they wish for. Many of the listshave simple necessities like socks and t-shirts.
Students, parents, andstaff then shop at a local store and purchase the gifts. We then spendthe evening at school wrapping each gift.
Last year we collected $4,109.13 and provided gifts for 70children. Since our first year in 1995 when we raised $400.00 for the Adopt-a-Family program, more of the community and the school have gotten involved every year and we hope for more of the same this year. To date
we have raised just over $41,004.00 in twelve years
