The Problem

The Learn and Serve Marathon was a personal project of mine that brought together members of my school and community. The day was essentially a volleyball tournament, composed of teams of students, parents, and teachers that encouraged spectators and participants to peruse provided literature on cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. The pamphlets, brochures, and booklets were donated by local and national cancer research organizations and through this literature, periodic announcements, and quick facts posted around the gymnasium, we educated those who attended about how their actions are affecting them in the present and how they will affect them in the future. We raised funds for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation and The American Cancer Society through donations, t-shirt sales, concessions, and a split of profits from local merchants who set up tables at the tournament. We raised $2600 to be split between these two organizations.
