Be The Change

28,800. The number struck me like an elbow to the chest, causing me to take several slow concentrated blinks to swallow it. It was the beginning of the school year, I knew this wasn't going to be the same mundane routine I was used to. Something had to give. I had the ability to do whatever I wanted, to change what I thought needed to be changed, And It just so happens that I had something very real in mind. I began to talk to my friends, I asked them if i was to start a club within the school would they join. They got excited. I talk to the principle and asked him if I could have permission to start a club within my school. I told him I would start it, run it, and do all the work, I just needed his permission. He said yes, and here is what we've done. 28,800 children die every single day of starvation, but not tomorrow. The group I started within my school is called Be The Change (BTC) I have a goal of raising $28,800 by the end of my senior year and I think it is very doable. Within the next few months I believe that we can begin to start raising real money because our community is beginning to know that I am not kidding. As much as I want to raise this money I think it is equally important to raise awareness. Did you know that 28,800 people were dying everyday of hunger or hunger related diseases? You might, but chances are your average teen can't see beyond their simple idea of the rest of the world. "Sure people are different, but in the end the suffering isn't that bad at all. I'm happy so they must be happy to." This isn't just affecting the children the money is going to, it's affecting the hundreds of teens this project comes in contact with. I can see the changes it is making in their day to day lives. These kids have begun realizing that they are a part of something much bigger. And while all this is going on, we can play a huge part in ending it. Be The Change you want to see in the world.
