SOSE project at West High School. Books are borrowed from Pond Gap Elementary School's library and are recorded onto CD's. These discs are then donated to Pond Gap for classroom use or to be checked out from the library. Many Pond Gap students are below reading level, and this project is designed to help them improve their literacy skills. Because many students struggle to read, they do not find reading a pleasurable activity, and I would love to change this! Many of the students at Pond Gap have parents that work full time and thus are only exposed to books during school hours. I hope that this project will allow children to have a story read to them while they follow along with the book. Pond Gap also has several ESL students who are struggling to grasp the English language and reading. They have several books available in Spanish, and these books will also be recorded in Spanish and English so that these students can become comfortable with the concept of reading in their native language and then transition into English. Books will also be recorded in several other languages. If awarded a grant, the money would be used to pay for blank CD's, a classroom set of CD players, and possibly more books for the Pond Gap library.
