My friend, Lyndsay, and I started a project after traveling to the West African country of Liberia to help build a six-classroom schoolhouse. We traveled their with our school, the University of Indianapolis. After visiting this place and seeing the incredible needs of the community we became a part of, it was difficult to go back to our lives like normal. They may have a schoolhouse, but the village still lacked even the most basic of school supplies, like textbooks, and many kids can't pay the $75 it takes to go to school for a year.
We raised the money, about $15,000, for the schoolhouse before we went on the trip by basically asking for it. Our ten-member workteam wrote letters, spoke, and used networks to jointly come up with the money for the building costs. What we want to do now that we are back is sell a product to raise money. Instead of a person just making a donation, we want them to get something tangible in return.
After seeing the incredible needs in the world, it is easy to be overwelmed. However, that's not a reason to stay inactive. If you can't do something big, do something small; but most importantly, do something. That's basically the concept behind our name; Inches International. Sometimes it's best to work in small steps, or by inches.
This is the concept of our product. What we wanted to do was create a wearable object that reminds people of their help in providing scholarships to kids in Liberia and Sierra Leone. So we came up with the idea of a "ruler bracelet". It's a wearable ruler with the phrase, "...by inches" on it to remind the person wearing it that change happens in small increments. We started our venture in October and have produced and sold about 500 bracelts. The production cost of a bracelet is about a dollar and we sell them for $5.
Basically, to summarize, we're selling bracelets to raise money to help put kids in school in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This grant would give us some extra funds to develop our project without having to spend money we raise.
