ShapeUp South Boston started as a call for resources and education regarding healthy eating, exercise and physical activity. The South Boston Community Center in Boston, MA will be offering the program in monthly cycles.
Interested particpants come once a week for 60 minutes. The goal of this program is to increase awareness and education around the topic of health behaviors, and implementing behavior change regarding physical activity, exercise and nutrition. Program materials are based off of information provided by the Center for Diease Control, American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.
Weekly topics include: 1) Calculating individual CVD risks based on BMI, risk factors, and activity level. 2) Calculating healthy weights and individual caloric needs, 3) Physical activity and nutrition recommendations 4) My pyramid, portion control, making healthy choices at resteraunts and fast-food establishments 5) Overcommming barriers to physical activity, exercise and healthy eating 6)Relapse prevention 7) Injury prevention
Due to limited funding, participants must pay a low-fee in order to cover costs of materials. The hope of this program is to make it a free resource available at community centers, available to anyone, especially those in low socioeconomic status where obesity related issues and health iliteracy are highest.
