In Beaumont, Texas, there is a very small farmer's market that meets on Saturdays and Wednesdays in front of the huge H-E-B on Dowlen Road. This farmer's market includes farms from all around Beaumont, and does not exceed ten contributors. The turnout is always low, and very few citizens even know about it's existence. Beaumont is also always on the list of one of the most unhealthy cities in America, and only recently has begun adding sidewalks to new infrastructure. There is a decent amount of parkland, but seems to be mostly vacant of playgrounds, at least ones that meet proper safety standards, thus providing little outdoor activities for the youth. Through my own experience I have realized that community supported gardens being placed on or near school grounds have greatly increased not only exercise and outdoor activities for children, but also a healthier lifestyle and greater understanding of nature and the life cycle.
