The Problem

Youth Mic, WKCR 89.9 FM New York A teen radio program airing since June of 2005. With the technical support of fantastic WKCR staff, high school and middle school-aged Youth Mic producers create a weekly, live, half-hour talk show on issues important to teens, from Spoken Wordand Poetry to Pet Peeves to Metal Detectors in Schools. Listen: Monday nights from 9-9:30pm, live on 89.9FM New York or streamed on www.wkcr.org. All of the shows are also archived on our website at www.wkcr.org --> Archives --> Youth Mic Archives. Youth Mic participants are students in New York City schools who have expressed interest in the program, usually with no prior radio or journalism experience. Most come from Harlem, Washington Heights, and Morningside Heights, though some commute from lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx as well, even Staten Island! At Youth Mic, students receive training in all aspects of public affairs radio and produce an incredible, unique show.

Plan of Action

Right now 8 college staff and alumni work 35 middle school and high school students.

Project Updates

1/7/08-The core groups of about twenty-five students come mainly from Washington Heights and Harlem, but their show has been doing a greater amount of outreach in the Bronx and Brooklyn to pull a more diverse group of teenagers into the program. Members have been showing even more interest in the program, and are asking if they can come in to the station to work, even on days when they are not meeting.
