…at least for now. Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, has canceled his upcoming concert in Phoenix, Arizona in protest of its recent illegal immigration bill. The bill was signed by Arizona governor Jan Brewer last month, and entails a controversial crackdown on identifying, prosecuting, and deporting illegal immigrants. Other groups and individuals in the music industry have joined the protest against the bill as well, including hip-hop group Cypress Hill and Shakira.
In a recent tweet, Pitbull said, “How is the country we enjoy and love bcuz of its human rights, freedom, opportunity and that has been built by immigrants, now start 2 deny them… It is contradicting 2 everything the USA stands 4.”
The biggest debate over the new bill is that it would allow government-enforced racial profiling. Hispanic communities in Arizona and around the country are alarmed at how it will affect them, worrying that their collective race will become a thing of suspicion in the eyes of the government.
More recently, the state of Arizona signed a law that bans the teaching of ethnic studies in public schools. What’s your take on the recent Arizona controversies? To do something in supporting the issue of immigration reform, check out our tips on what you can do.
