The DSC World Journalism Preparatory School is out to change the world one campaign at a time, whether it be Teens for Jeans, Pics for Pets, or a book drive for their school. They've even donated their hair to Locks of Love - these teens have balls! Club leader Katherine Georgia Eglezos discusses WJPS's inspirations, challenges, and more.
Who/what inspired you to create (or join) a DoSomething.org club?
Our high school had one when I was a freshman and they didn't do much. After those seniors graduated I decided it was time for a change and to take matters into my own hands. For the past three years our Do Something Club has done multiple projects and campaigns to better benefit our school, community and those who don't even know we're there. We're all about helping people and making a difference, and are out to change the world.
Tell us about the most awesome sauce campaign or project you ever completed?
We have done so many campaigns it's hard to keep track. We've done Teens for Jeans, Pics for Pets, our Cancer Awareness event/fundraising, and Autism Speaks walk and fundraising. We’ve also donated our hair for Locks of Love, had a book sale to donate books to our school, and so much more. Everything has turned out great so far and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
Tell us about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it?
One challenge we often face is money. For every project that we do and every campaign that we run, we usually don't have any money in which to get it off the ground. We've often overcome this problem by borrowing money from our school and paying them back or supplying some money ourselves as club members.
Any advice for other students looking to start (or join) a DS club?
I would DEFINITELY start a Do Something Club. It totally changed my life and saved me in so many ways. It's crazy fun but also a lot of work and responsibility, so definitely have a plan and be organized. Also, you really need to make sure that your club members are as hardworking as you are.
