Summer of Solutions Ithaca (SOSI) is a youth led initiative to bring the frameworks of justice and organizing to sustainability work in upstate New York. Our mission is to empower young people from diverse backgrounds to become leaders in the creation of an anti-oppressive movement for environmental justice.
Summer of Solutions Ithaca has four goals:
1. To enable young people to lead and direct the programs that young people participate in.
2. To enrich Ithaca's sustainability groups with an "organizing" framework.
3. To emphasize freedom from discrimination and equal access to decision-making in the climate movement, because the struggles for social justice and climate solutions are bound together.
4. To unite the movement to stop hydraulic fracturing (fracking) with the movement for community- and justice-based solutions.
We aim to achieve these goals by partnering with community environmental groups to create a summer training center. The Summer of Solutions Ithaca Training Institute is a free, two month program for young people. Program participants will directly collaborate with community partners to build topical and pragmatic skills as well as knowledge about organizing and environmental justice. Trainings will focus around topics such as movement building, campaign planning, anti-oppression, and food justice. Workshops will focus on practical skills such as urban gardening, home weatherization, social media, food preservation, greywater irrigation, and narrative storytelling.
