Problem Statement Studies of the problematic situations in education have revealed several key areas to be addressed for academic success such as, the lack of communication, mental focus, and poor general health to name a few. The lack of discipline has in many cases clasped the system into a black whole of kayos. Some of these same problems have affected the Bronx Expeditionary high school students as well. We feel without the benefit of a music curriculum a grate deal of our students will be left behind and forgotten. The plight of music education in our nation has given our society a black eye. Nation wide programs for the children are being cut. The free arts programs have all but vanished in some communities, and have vanished completely in others (Yonkers ft.). First lady Hilary Rodham Clinton has given the issue federal recognition, when she introduced her arts through education programs in 1990. The programs were designed to introduce the arts to every child with special emphasis on disadvantage at risk youth. Ms. Clinton’s actions showed she understood that a rounded education had to include the arts. But unfortunately rapid cuts still ravage the last of the cities arts programs. The Bronx School of Expeditionary learning is no exception. Because of the small size of our learning community we are constantly being forced to cut programs such as music and art to meet the academic needs of our campus. Unfortunately these cuts are also depriving our students of some of the tools needed for success in today’s global market. Objectives: I have spent the last twenty years developing training methods which the education systems are just realizing can be affective and sound. Today’s standard, cooperative learning model has been a tool of mine twenty years before the concept had been discussed in education classes. That’s because each of my lessons will be designed to teach too more then one aspect of the student’s growth. The three month course, gives the student necessary disciplines and strategies to deal with the educational demons listed above. The classroom will be designed to ensure that each child involved in the study will be given the opportunity to reach their full potential, fostering self-esteem and self- awareness. Each child will be instructed in a co-operative environment, which hones communication and group dynamics skills that are essential professional qualities, which will be needed for the job market. The research will involve the monitoring of ten students entering our program in regards to their academic and social growth and the possible affects their music training has on them. Also a school wide survey will be administered in order to understand the affects that the lack of a music program has had on the learning community. It is my goal for this project to demonstrate the need of such programs and the positive outcomes they can have on the overall development of inner city youth.
