My project is called Link Crew. I did not personally create the project; I am however, part of the first team of Link Leaders at my high school. The project has been created to help incoming freshmen to adapt to high school. How it works is easy, a group of chosen high school juniors and seniors are paired up together, once in a group of two leaders, they are given a group of ten or more freshmen to be in their group, their "crew". Our goal is to create a smooth transition between middle school and high school. As everyone well knows, high school can be brutal. The purpose of link crew and its leaders are trying to solve many problems that occur in almost all schools such as: peer pressure, bullying and poor academic scores. We also create a big brother big sister type of friendship, with this relationship freshmen are able to see someone they know in the halls and able to say “hi” and continue a conversation without any fear of upperclassmen. Not only do we do our best to make them feel wanted and welcomed in a new school through activities such as: orientation with includes get to know you games and icebreakers. All the orientation activities are geared towards common problems and set back that occur in high school, and outside of school. I and the other leaders are able to help mentor the freshman along with have a lot of fun. In accordance with fun and mentoring, myself and the rest of the crew hold weekly tutoring for our freshman. This program allows freshman to adapt easily to high school, and do well both academically and socially.
