The Problem

TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer), is a developmental soccer program for children ages 4-19 with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities. Every year, since 2002, we have had three seasons. For approximately 24 weekends each year, our athletes have the oportunity to exercise, learn soccer, gain confidence, and make new friends. each session begins early for the "buddies," so they can receive training to ensure that they understand their role as buddies. When the players arrive, they are carefully paired with a buddy based on several characteristics of the player, and each player is given individual goals. About fifteen minutes into the session, the whole group comes together for warm up exercises. Players then work on drills in small groups or continue to work one to one with their buddy. The session ends with a game where the players are divided based on ability. The session always ends with smiles, hugs, high fives, and a team of winners.
