Dont Txt N Drive

The Problem

Cell phone use has grown rapidly over the past few years. Texting has become one of the major forms of communication for teens. Texting behind the wheel can have serious consequences that can even be fatal. In 2008, Fairport NY suffered a tragedy which killed 5 Senior girls, due to texting while driving. Texting while driving is a major problem in our community and needs to be addressed. The message needs to be spread and driver numbers involved needs to decrease. The community target was Pittsford, Fairport, and Rochester NY.

Plan of Action

There were many steps involved to get the program moving. Students needed to get on board to help out with the campaign. The school board met and approved the campaign within Pittsford Mendon High School. Sponsors, like AllState Insurance and Verizon Wireless, provided funding for promotional products and other expenses. News and media outlets were reached and given information on the campaign. The impact made on the community was huge. We gained complete support from the school, town, media, and surrounding area. NYState Sen. Jim Alessi also endorsed the campaign, speaking at our school assembly along with D.A. Mike Green. About a year after the campaign, Monroe County passed legislation to ban texting while driving, making it illegal.
