Erase Waste Recycle

The Problem

My name is Francesca Verdiales, I am a 17 year old senior and a 12 year Girl Scout currently working on my Gold Award. (A Gold Award is a project planned and lead by a senior Girl Scout that ideally will help to better their community and that should continue for years after its completed; I’m also the treasurer of my schools SEA club (Students for Environmental Awareness), and in one of our officer meetings last year we realized that our school hadn’t recycled; but in the past couple of months I’d noticed that you couldn’t watch TV or even shop without being reminded of the poor state of our environment. One thing that was obvious was without action it could only get worse. So, for my Gold Award I decided to start a recycling program Erase Waste – Recycle at my school and once established there it could be brought to other schools in my county. We had a great kick off at our open house on September 4, 2008 in Florida. We sold pizza to be able to purchase trash cans for the upcoming school year at Spruce Creek High School where we will begin to recycle both aluminum and plastic, helping to reduce our carbon footprint. I am using 12 trashcans with lids as recycling bins and am personally picking up the recyclables with the help of other student volunteers. My long term goal is to have a recycling company donate their service to come pick up the cans & plastic from the recycling dumpster that we will have for them. Then the SEA club would be able to continue with the recycling project with no problem or expense in the future. But, right now we need to buy trash bags and more trash cans besides several sets of gloves for our volunteers. That is where I need your assistance now. Please consider my project. Thank you and hope to hear soon from you.
