Hard-covers and paper-backs do you know what students lack?

The Problem

For my service project, I am planning to run a book drive to support local students and students in Kenya. With the books that I collect from donations I will fill classroom “libraries” both in the Shoreham-Wading River Elementary Schools and the Gikumene primary school as well as fourteen or fifteen other schools in Kenya. With the Grant that I receive I will be able to purchase more books as well as other needed classroom supplies. Currently two classes in the Wading River Elementary school are writing pen-pal letters to students in Kenya, and the Kenyan students are writing to the students here in America. I think this experience is great, culturally, for all of the participating students. Along with pursuing my project, I will be helping with another student’s project. Her plan is to get a 40 foot long container to fill with items that can be shipped to Kenya. The students in the Elementary school will be helping me by setting up a collection box in their school entryway. The teacher in the elementary school will also send out a flyer to the students’ parents asking for any donations.
