Heart and Sole

The Problem

Mission Statement: To provide team shoes for middle and high school teens who are homeless or are in foster care in the North Little Rock School District. Premise: Homeless children and foster children are often unable to participate in the many activities offered by the public schools because the shoes required for the programs are cost prohibitive for their family. Participating in these programs would teach these children coping skills, teamwork, discipline, and give them a sense of belonging to their new school and community. They will have goals to work toward and adults to mentor them while their life is out of control through no fault of their own. Their participation will boost their self-esteem, reduce discipline problems, and lower drop-out rates. The Program Will Furnish Shoes for: Basketball Bowling TennisFootball Golf GymnasticsTrack Softball Cross CountryBaseball Choir SoccerDance ROTC Drill Team Volleyball Band Method for Distribution:The Arkansas Department of Human Services, the School District and the Arkansas Activities Association will be made aware of the program and will help to see that the program is properly administered. School Districts will be provided a form for eligible kids to fill out. Once the child registers to participate in the team program, the form will be submitted to Heart and Sole (through the NLR Mayor’s Youth Council) and a voucher will be provided to purchase the shoes.
