New Haven Youth Day

The Problem

New Haven, Connecticut is a community known for its violence and drug problems, particularly among youth. Compared with other Connecticut cities, New Haven has high poverty and unemployment rates as well as low high school graduation rates. After asset mapping in the community and becoming more involved in the community through our work with Public Allies, we know that there are innumerable programs and people serving youth in New Haven. Our hope is that this project will highlight and increase awareness of opportunities available to youth and positive youth achievements.

Plan of Action

There are eight people working on this project. We have been working on this idea since September. Thus far, we have spent significant time doing community asset mapping to find out what the community needs are. We then held a community forum to recieve feedback and further direct our project. It was also a context for meeting potential partners. Since then, we have continued to recieve feedback and have been reaching out to community members to support our event through volunteering, financial contributions and in-kind contributions. The steps we will be taking in the next two months will be volunteer recruitment, finalizing workshop presenters and organizations represented at the resource fair, as well as the specific financial and other contributions related to the community meal and the talent showcase. The major impact will occur on the day of the fair, but we have already made significant contacts with collaborative partners.

Project Updates

We have secured Goffe Street park as well as James Hillhouse High School. We were able to get the school as a generous donation from the New Haven Public Schools Board of Education. We have about twenty partners coming to our resource fair and about eight workshop presenters secured, two of which are going to be run by teen youth groups. We have also come up with a name for this event, "Show Me What You Got New Haven"! We are still looking for more partners to be at our resource fair, volunteers and donations!

We are currently recruiting organizations for our resource fair! We have 23 confirmed and are finding new organizations every day! We are also in the process of recruiting talented youth for our talent showcase. If any youth ages 12-18 from New Haven CT would like to participate, please contact us at
