Norcross High School Blue Devils Run-5K and 1 Mile Fun Run

The Problem

I have been part of the Norcross High cross country and track & field teams for three years. Many of the students cannot afford to pay their participation fee as well as any other costs associated with the team (my high school, Norcross High, is a Title 1 school). Through this race, I am trying to raise money to help pay for their participation as well as new uniforms, meet fees, and travel expenses. I am also trying to build a running/walking community so that kids and adults can partake in a healthy activity. By building community spirit and helping support the runners at my high school, this race is fun for all ages and builds an energetic vibe all over.

Plan of Action

On February 8, 2014, I will coordinate the 4th NHS Blue Devils Run. Last year, my committee and I raised over $10,000 (over 40% more than the previous year) with 339 participants. For 2014, I hope to increase the race to 500 participants and $15,000 in profits. I have formed a new committee with adults and students (first meeting in October). Over the summer, I helped develop a new logo and updated the website, fb page, active.com, registration/sponsorship forms. Through letters and in person solicitations, I have thus far raised $2,000 and secured items for our raffle. I have met with various members of the running community (New Balance, YMCA, running stores) to advertise the race. I will be meeting with a USATF to have the course certified for the Peachtree Road Race. The committee and I will start sending press releases out to local and major publications. This year, we will change timing companies so I am scheduling meetings with several of these. Other action items: securing permits and police for the day of race, getting additional sponsorships and raffle items on weekends, printing and hanging signs, and working with a new t-shirt vendor.
