The Arabic House

The Problem

I am student at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. I am a Middle Eastern Studies major, and I complement my studies with the Arabic language. In December of 2007, my friend Rebecca and I decided to start an Arabic-related Living and Learning Cohort (LLC). An LLC groups students in collective housing based on a common interest. Just a month ago, our LLC was among the 40% of applicants that were approved for the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of our LLC is to improve the Arabic language skills of all members, learn about culture in the Middle East, and educate members about social issues plaguing the region. We have placed a big emphasis on the importance of volunteering, and have already enacted plans for this. We hope to tutor students of Middle Eastern descent within the Washington area, for example. It is also our hope to send each member overseas to the Middle East or North Africa to volunteer. This way, each member will experience the culture and environment, as well as do something good for the area. However, international volunteerism is quite expensive and, therefore, we do not have the financial means to do this. We hope that you will be able to help, as all contributions are sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your consideration!
