The Problem

At 16, Kiera was arrested and expelled...BECAUSE HER VOLCANO PROJECT ERUPTED NEAR THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA. This happens all the time: Despite the same rates of "misconduct" as white students, students of color are likelier to receive unfair punishment.

The Solution

In schools around the country, “zero-tolerance policies” lead to suspensions and in-school arrests for minor misconduct. The facts are clear: The presence of law enforcement in schools actually makes schools less safe and drives students out of education and into the criminal justice system.

Meet with your principal and encourage them to sign the Safer Schools Pledge, which says that they won’t involve law enforcement for minor infractions. Want personal help? Email Pilar (pilar@dosomething.org), our anti-discrimination specialist.
