Relay for Life- West Limestone

Official Project

The Problem

My best friend and I co-founded the first West Limestone Relay for Life Team in 2005. This team consisted of about thirteen youth. We raised money for the American Cancer Society through many fundraisers and at Relay for Life. I became captain of the team in 2006, and we raised over 3,000 dollars for the American Cancer Society through holding dances, car washes, chicken stews, silent auctions, raffles, and other fundraisers. I also founded Cards For A Cause, which sold and distributed Valentine's Day Cards to high school students with the proceeds going to charity. Our team also chose to educate our community on cancer risks and prevention. We held Purple Ribbon Day, where purple awareness ribbons were worn by all of the students and staff at our school, and hung signs with cancer statistics and ways for the students to get involved throughout the hall. We sold moons and stars with students names on them to decorate the hall with, and we collected quarters from elementary school students in our school. The class who raised the most money received a popcorn and movie party one afternoon. By 2007, we had almost fourty active team members on our Relay for Life Team, most being high school youth.
