11 Facts About Drunk Driving

  1. The average person metabolizes alcohol at the rate of about one drink per hour.
  2. Drinking strong coffee, exercising or taking a cold shower will not help sobering up. Only time will sober a person up.
  3. Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death among youth aged 15-20. In 2008, 11,773 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one third (32%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.
  4. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving.
  5. In 2009, 12 percent of high school males reported driving after drinking alcohol, compared with eight percent of females.
  6. Nearly 75% of all drunk drivers killed in accidents in 2008 weren't wearing seat belts.
  7. Between 2005 and 2009, an estimated 3,940 lives were saved thanks to minimum drinking age laws.
  8. In 2009 alone, an estimated 623 lives were saved by minimum drinking age laws.
  9. During the past 30 days, one out of 10 high school students drove after drinking alcohol and more than one out of four rode with a driver who had been drinking.
  10. Among 15- to 20-year old drivers involved in fatal crashes, 31% of the drivers who were killed had been drinking and 25% who were killed in crashes had a BAC of .08 or higher.
  11. Nighttime drivers were four times more likely to die in drunk-driving accidents than those who drove during the day.
