11 Facts about suicide

  1. More than 33,000 people die by suicide every year in the U.S.
  2. Every 18 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies by suicide - that’s around 92 suicides every day.
  3. Suicides ranks third as the cause of death among 15-24 year olds in America.
  4. Firearms are the most commonly used method of completing suicides.
  5. Males complete suicide at a rate four times that of females.
  6. Females however attempt suicide three times more than males.
  7. Caucasians have higher rates of completed suicides (12.4 per 100,000) than African Americans (4.9 per 100,000).
  8. For every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made.
  9. Suicides rates traditionally increase during times of economic crises.
  10. Between 25 and 50% of people who kill themselves have previously attempted suicide.
  11. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.
